Message: Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me with this!
This started a few months ago when I went out to take my for a drive and it wouldn't start. I tried putting gas in it and then it started so I figured maybe it had a gas leak or something. Then I went and filled it with gas, but I haven't seen or smelled any gas so I don't think that is the problem.
The next time I went to drive it, it started and I got a couple miles down the road and it just died while I was going down the road. It wouldn't start back up so I waited about 15 minutes and then its started and again so I drove back home.
Since then I have changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, rotar, distributor cap and the fuel filter. When I turn the key one click I can hear what sounds like the fuel pump turning on, so I don't think that's the problem, but it could be.
I have gotten it to start a couple times since then and when it starts it runs better than it has since I've owned it, although a couple of times I got into the gas pretty hard just after I started it while it was idling and it died and wouldn't re-start. Other times I have let it idle for a couple minutes and then I can get into the gas as hard as I want.
The last few times I've tried starting it, it won't start. The engine turns over just fine, but it never starts. My Dakota has 128,000 miles on it.
I don't remember the specific codes it spit out, but I also tried turning the key on and off 3 times and counting the number of "Check Engine" light flashes. One of the codes indicated that an ignition spark sensor or something to that might not be working. Can somebody explain to me how to find that sensor and on a scale of 1-10 how easy it would be to replace?

Message: Can you check the codes again to see if the code is there? I don't know of an ignition spark sensor.
was it crankshaft position sensor? sounds like it might be.
the crankshaft position sensor along with camshaft postion sensor (and others) feed the PCM to control injector sequence and ignition timing. This kinda sounds like the problem, code number would tell.
87-96 should be similar, on my 95 the crankshaft position sensor is on the transmission bellhousing.
to test
disconnect the CPS wiring harness connector from the main wiring harness (near rear of right cylinder head).
place an ohmmeter across terminals B and C, meter should read open (infinite resistance). As you look at the connector, tab on top, left to right is A, B , and C. If resistance is indicated, replace sensor.

Message: I had a 92 dakota that ran fine if it sat for a long time, then if you shut it off it wouldnt start for a couple hours, turned out the fuel pump was bad. Changed it, never had another problem, also, you might check the idle air temp sensor on your manifold, i had one go bad in my latest dakota, would be running down the highway and it would just die and not start, take forever to start and when it did i had to rev the piss out of it to keep it running. Hope something helps?? lol good luck

(Copied my post from another board, just in case someone has an answer here that wouldn't have seen the other board.)
Our 2000 4cyl Dakota (200,000+ miles) has run great for 4 1/2 years, no problems, regular maintenance. Three days ago it got to work fine, but would not start later. Had to be towed home. Changed plugs, wires, coil, the electrical in the distributor, everything to no avail. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Could it be the Powertrain control module (which, it seems, is a dealer part)?

(Got a question here re: fuel, my response below)

Thanks. Yes, we have fuel, just no fire. I finally found another thread in here somewhere re: this issue. Someone suggested trading the PCM with someone else's to test the possibility without the expense. Does anyone know how interchangeable they are? Our 2001 Dakota Quad (our only other reliable vehicle) is a V-8, automatic. We also have a friend who has the same truck model as our 'dead' one, but not sure of the year or engine size. Don't want to kill her truck, too. I'm wondering if that could happen. Could we hurt the other PCM if it were the wrong model or application?
Thanks. Janet

Message: Change the hall-effect sensor in your distributor...An '89 uses it for the spark. It's the round black plate with the pigtail you see when you take the dist. cap and rotor off. It looks like a dust cover but when you take the screws out of it it will lift right out and the hall sensor is molded into the bottom of it. They get flaky when they start to go bad and will cause the problems you describe.
As far as the fuel pump, everytime I've ever had one go, they go and stay gone; nothing intermittent about it. Good Luck.
