Woohoo... check engine light kicked on today. I was taking the Dak out to warm it up so I could check the tranny fluid level since it's got a leak. Get about 50 feet and the light's on. Took it back home and checked the fluid level...very low but still in the "OK" zone. Filled it back up with Quaker State ATF+3 cuz I'm too poor to afford ATF +4 from the dealer at the moment and I plan on having the leak fixed sometime soon anyway which will more than likely require a fluid change.

Anyway... I reset the computer and all was fine. Took the truck out...take off down the road, transmission hangs up in first until about 3500 rpm's (normally shifts out of first around 2000 rpm's) and finally shifts. Check engine light kicks back on.

Since my truck is a 98...I'm gonna have to go get the code pulled for sure since I can't do the fancy lil on-off-on-off-on trick and I don't have a scanner here. But I was talking to my friend and he said if my check engine light's on, it shouldn't be my tranny...he said I should have a check trans light. That true? My truck has had tranny problems for a couple years now but it's never tripped a light...plus it's shifting weird ever since the light went on. So is my friend right...is this something else or do our trucks not have a check trans light?

NO ' check tranny light '.........
Possible [ speed sensor ] problem !
I believe there is a sensor on the tranny
which senses speed or pressure - probable bad

Damn...you called it. Got the code scanned at Autozone...speed sensor. $29 fix. Much better than taking it to a dealer and having em say, "Oh...your transmission needs rebuilt."

i was just going to suggest that you look at the speed sensor.. mine acted up on my 3.9L.. It turns out, that the connector was loose. I just un-hooked it, and put some vasoline in the connector to keep water out. it worked fine untill the last day I had it..

Glad to hear that you got it fixed..

By the way...I'd just like to thank you guys and the guy at Autozone for letting me know when I unscrew that sensor that my farking transmission was gonna start draining on my head. lol

Installed new sensor...reset the computer...light stayed off and it's shifting normally again.
