Subject: intake pan gasket?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just took my 99 dakota sport to get an oil change at a local dealer, and they told me that the the intake pan gasket is leakin internally and the engine is burning oil. They also told me that it would cost $405 to repair... if they did it.

Would it be worth it to fix myself? Or would i need all kinds of special tools and the like to get to it. If I could do it myself, what parts would i need to get and where exactly is the intake pan gasket.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Ryan

oh, by the way the truck has the 3.9L v-6

Ryan I saved a lot of money then, because I changed mine myself.Parts are cheap ,and I did
mine on a lazy sunday. The work is easy to do
with basic tools, but you will need a torque
wrench,and a solvent tank.the intake manifold
is very dirty and so is the pan.Mine was so
bad I used a bead blaster on the pan.It would
be worth it to do yourself. You will learn alot
about your truck. The pan is bolted to the bottom
of the manifold. When you look down through th
throttle body you are looking at the pan on
the bottom. Good luck

like yup said, it's easy to do.. just need several metric wrenches/sockets and a torque wrench.

to clean it out, just use brake parts cleaner.. it doesnt have to be perfectly clean because even a manifold with a good seal will be oil stained from PCV blowby.

for a gasket, just use RTV instead of the paper gasket.. it will last much longer.

Be sure to replace that dreaded belly pan gasket with a Fel-Pro. They have a steel reinforced gasket that is much better than the Mopar paper gasket! I used a combination of both sets Fel-Pro for belly pan and Mopar for the intake. Both gasket sets combined were less than $50.00. Word of caution when you are torqing your bolts use an inch pound not ft pound wrench. It took me about 7 hrs. Also buy alot of razor blades for cleaing and if you have'nt already a hayes book or other. It is also a good time to replace the fuel injector o-rings in case they are leaking either vacum or fuel. Fel-Pro also has these.

Good luck....

I did it myself and bought the billet kit from Hughes? that replaces the stock belly pan and it comes with a gasket. Need a torque wrench to install it properly. You also don't need to use gasket sealer on this particular kit.

If doing it another way I hear "the right stuff" from Napa is a great sealer for gaskets.

It will take you six hours or so total. Don't mix up your bolts, definitely mark them somehow. Pay attention when you are removing manifold bolts, if there is oil on them you can tell which cylinders were leaking, not to mention where the current gasket is sticking out at.

One other important fact:
You need to by new bolts from the dealer for the belly pan and intake, about .75 per bolt. The belly pan bolts will come with loctite already on them and use blue loctite on the intake bolts. These bolts are strecth one time-do not reuse...

How do you test for a gasket leak? I have heard something about taking the PCV off and pluging up the opening or something along those lines.

What type of gasket leak? If it is the belly pan there will be oil pooled up just below the throttle body (open the venturi). If it's vacum leaks your hunting use Berryman chem-tool spray and spray sparingly around common areas I.E. vacum hose connections, throttle body, intake gasket area and fuel injectors. This will cause the rough idle to smooth out momentarily.

Hope this helps.

I am a little confused about the pan and intake gaskets, and the order of them.
Does it go like this?
Intake
gasket
Belly Pan
gasket
Engine

Are you supposed to use RTV on each side of each gasket? Thanks.

The intake\plenum resides on top of the lifter valley and the engine heads (your throttle body sits on top of this). In order to change the belly pan gasket (inspection plate) you must remove the intake, because it bolts to the bottom side of the intake. What engineer conjoured this up is unemployed right now! Only use RTV-black or gold or Mopar silicone on the water jackets between the intake and heads. Then, at each corner of the end gaskets where the intake manifold and end gasket meets put a liberal amount. So-remove intake-remove belly pan-clean all surfaces to recieve new gaskets-put back together and torq.....If your using the cork gaskets on the ends put silicone down then the cork and let it set for a while to help hold them in place.
