Howdy,

just bought a 98' with 3.9 V6, 2 wheel drive, 5 speed. codes pulled are for fuel gauge malfunction.

The fuel gauge will read correctly, and intermittently (every five minutes or so) it will peg out to empty for 10 seconds and return to normal.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not aware of any code for a fuel guage malfunction. What was the code?

There's a float type sending unit in the fuel tank that screws into the pump and uses the pump's electrical connection. You've got 2 things to check. First is the sending unit. you'll need to get the part from the dealer (seen prices $50-75). It could also be the fuel pump. Do you have any fuel delivery issues? Even if you have little fuel left? New pumps around under $200, i recommend napa instead of autozone or advance.

I've had both, 1st time my fuel guage quit working, replacing the sending unit fixed the issue. The 2nd time, I had to replace the pump.

I have a brand new sending unit that fits my 95 (bought it but didn't fix issue, had to replace pump which came with a sending unit). I'm not sure if it's the same part for your 98 but if it is, I'm willing to sell it for $40+shipping (I paid around $75, still have receipt but can't return 'special orders').

I had the codes read at Autozone, and the guy only told me the general description of the code, rather than the number. I looked the codes up and I believe the description he gave matches the codes below.

P0464 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Intermittent
P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
