Message: The standard is 2000 lbs, but if your truck is equipped with the towing package i do believe it is about max 4500lbs. The standard is correct, but don't quote me on the max.

Message: Hi Doug, 2000 is a little too less for my trailer 4500 would be OK. I hope my Dakota is equipped with the towing package. How can I check this ? At the moment there is no hitch installed. Thanks Beat

Message: all dakotas are equipped to tow 2000 trailers. if you install a hitch bolted to the frame, that would bring it up to about 4000-5000. however, i wouldnt tow 4000lbs very far with that, because if you dont have a towing package installed, that means you dont have a remote transmission cooler installed. if your trailer weighs 3000lbs, then you would be ok. after that, i recommend having a transmission remote cooler installed.
a v8 dakota, with towing package, is capable of towing up to 7000lbs trailer weight.

Message: Don is right - no need to put a tranny cooler on a standard. Some misleading info has been presented here; not all v-8 Daks are rated for 7000 lbs. Other things, suchas axle ratio need to be taken into account to reach that. My '00 4.7 v-8 with 3.55 gears is rated around 5000 (I forget the exact amount), so I'm guessing 4500 would be high for a v-6 (maybe if it has 3.92 gears?). Also payload refers to how much you can haul in your truck; not how much you can tow. I'll bet if you do a search on this site someone has posted more accurate info on the towing ability of the 3.9 v-6.

Message: Thanks to all for your help. I will now buy a hitch which I can bolt to the frame. Then we can start for Holliday to France with our 2500 lbs trailer. Beat

Message: as an engineer i will tell you that those numbers are below the actual amount your truck can tow. they throw in a big factor of safety to cover their butts. if you want to tow 4500 lbs then tow it. its not a matter of the frame taking it...it will do it, you just need a class 3 or 4 hitch and trailer brakes. if you have an automatica(which you dont) then you would want a tranny cooler. just dont try to pull it at 80 mph or up huge hills, you will run out of power.

Message: I have towed a trailer with the wife and kids and a bed loaded with gear and firewood. The total weight was probably about 2500 lbs (the trailer is a small pop-up that weighs about 1200 lbs) on a few 300 mile trips without any problems. Based on these trips, I would not think twice about towing a 4500 lb trailer (especially if it has brakes).
btw. I have a class IV drawtite hitch installed which is way more than I need for these conditions.
