Message: whens the last time they were bled?
antilock brakes require that you bleed them every 20,000 miles or so.
you should find it in the owners manual or any good service manual.
not saying it's your prob but its a good start

Message: My Uncle had a 96 Ram with this problem. He disconected the wheel speed sensor. He had no problems by doing this. Anyways how many of us were driving before ABS was invented, and it's only at the rear wheels.

Message: another mark is right. speed sensor located in the diff not at the wheel. i wouldn't worry about bleeding the brakes unless the pedal felt spongy.

Message: Dude, don't just take the sensor out, replace it. It's only $35 or so. You can do it yourself but be very careful not to break part of the sensor off in the pumpkin. Otherwise have a dealer or some other compotent shop do it. It's a 20 minute fix. Your computer needs that sensor.

Message:
Yup...Rear Wheel speed sensor. Located on the top of the differential (13mm nut to remove it and swap it out). Make sure you lift it straight up. If you bend it, you can break the plastic housing and drop the internal coil into the differential gears (not a pretty sight).
Taking the light out or unplugging the sensor is a "backyard mechanic fix" and will cause problems with fuel and timing control on 97+ models (different parameters and checks in the PCM).
Do it right - spend the $30 and replace the sensor.

no how no way will that cause a sensor to send a "not fuctioning properly signal to the computer!

Message: could be the proportioning valve, if i remember right there is a connection there. (at least there was on my old car that caused that problem) also would check to see that you dont have a leak and make sure you arent low on fluid. if all else fails and you can still stop pull the bulb out of the dash and drive. rear abs doesnt do crap anyway....

Message: unpluging the sensor will not make make it turn off. unpluging it makes it come on.it reads the
gear in the rear end.there is a magnet on the backside of the sensor.how bleeding your brake would affect a mechanical reading is beyond me,thats just stupid.take the cover off the diff and look inside, there will be a little plate at the top near the back, this is a magnet. make sure there is nothing stuck to it like a piece of metal (ie piece of a gear). Clean the magnet .
also make sure everything is tight inside the rearend because it reads off that gear and if your bearing caps came loose and the gear move over a little bit then it wont get a reading.also check the wires from the sensor because like i said when you unplug it the light will come on, so if the wire broke or grounded out then it would give the same reading as if it was unpluged right. hope this helps. and you dont have to bleed your brakes that has nothing to do with it.

Message: i forgot to mention to check the c clips that hold the accual axles in the rear end. i had one fall apart and the fell into the diff and jambed the gears. if this happened and stuck to the magnet it could afect the reading. i know it's a strech but you never know.also it would be nice to make sure those clips are in good shape anyways because if one falls out you will loose your axle and wheel and everthing and thats never fun. good luck
