Subject: Spark plug woes IP: Logged
Message: I recently purchased an 88 Dakota 2wd v6 longbed with 231000 miles. I read in these forums that for performance Autolite plugs should be used. I pulled the old plugs out(AC DELCO)and they looked brand new and were very white, not brown or black and were dry,no oil fouling...thank god. I installed the Autolites (3923) and it ran good for about a week. Then it started loading up on fuel and ran like crap. Blew black smoke and smelled very rich. Figured maybe my fuel filter was plugging up so I replaced it.
I pulled the first and last plug on the passenger side and both were black(dry, carbon fouled). So I opted to put the old plugs back in. I drove home and when I pulled those 2 plugs again they were both all pretty and white.......... and all the others were as well. What could cause this? As for now ive reinstalled the old AC Delco plugs to see what will happen......it seems to be running just fine. My Fuel pump is VERY noisy as well,in traffic sitting, you can just hear it hummin, what could cause that? Thanks for the responses.

Message: Did you gap the Autolites before you put them in? You can't just take them from the box and drop them in.

Message: And what did you gap them at? Most folks on here that use them also have mods. Those folks gap them more than the factory recommended gap to take advantage of those mods.

Message: Don't the 88 Dak's require a different autolite plug and not the 3923's? And as far as the gaps...we usually gap .005 over...depending on mods (especially ignition mods) some even go further.

Autolite Platinum | AP65 | .035 | |
Autolite Resistor | 65 | .035 | OE Style |
Yeah... you're using the wrong plugs. Not sure what a heat range cooler would be or if it would even work, but if you don't get pinging with the 65's, you don't need to worry about it. From what I've heard, the 3.9L's don't run well with the double plats so I'd suggest running the AP65's or if you're just looking for OE style, then go with the 65's.
