Subject: Water pump ? IP: Logged
Message: How hard is it to replace a water pump on a 99’ V6 4x4? Is it worth an extra $200 to have someone else do it? If I do it myself, what are some of the areas that cause the most problems?
Thanks for the help!

Message: i wouldn't say very hard. but, i've done a few waterpumps. if you've got some mechanical aptitude and common sense, buy a Haynes and try for yourself. don't forget to change the t-stat and the bypass hose while you're at it.
hardest part will be getting to the waterpump.
since your fluid is fresh. drain the coolant into something so you can reuse it.

Message: daddio is right, I just replaced the water pump on my 97 along with the t-stat, radiator hoses, and bypass hose. Looking back I would have paid someone to do it because replacing the bypass hose is a real mother. It is one of those things that if you do it once it is easy in the future but the learning curve sucks. Make sure you have the parts (aka upper lower radiator hose/bypass hose, t-stat preferably 180 deg, t-stat housing, and inlet hose connection due to likely being rusted out along with RTV sealant of the proper temp.
