Subject: 94 Dakota Fuel Problem

My truck quit while my girlfriend was driving it. (Figures) It is a 94 w/3.9 auto. It has spark and runs as long as you spray ether in the throttle body, but not otherwise. There seems to be little or no fuel pressure. There is fuel at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail, but no pressure. I verified that the fuel pump relay is working and installed a new pump...no go. Is it possible the the pressure regulator (little thing that goes on top the fuel pump) is bad? I had to swap it on to the new pump, as they don't come installed. Anybody else had trouble with these?

if it is the pressure regulator, most auto part stores won't sell just the regulator, they will only sell the sending unit which includes everything. just a heads up

first plan of action, buy a new fuel filter and change it. you may have a clogged fuel filter. also, is the pump running? elecrical connection, maybe bad ground. just check your lines check everything before you throw money into it, but start with the fuel filter.

The filter and regulator are all part of the fuel pump assembly. I replaced the whole thing, no luck, still won't run. No fuel pressure. Does anyone know what voltage is supposed to be present on what wire at the pump? Haynes says the dark green/black wire from the relay is for the fuel pump, but that one has no voltage at the pump connector. The middle two have 12 and 8 volts showing with the ignition on. I jumped the connections at the relay block, bat + to dk green/black, but that gave me no voltage back at the fuel pump connector. The owners manual says fuse 5 is for the pump, and that fuse is OK. I can't find any broken or corroded wires. I opened the whole harness under the fuse box, everything looked like new. I don't see any damage on the loom going back to the tank. I tried swapping the relays around too. Is there a broken wire somewhere? I don't really have any other info to go on....

I'm going through the same thing right now on my 89. 89 doesn't have a "fuel pump relay" but has an auto-shut down relay. It basically shuts down the whole truck. After the relay there is a spice (on 89) that feeds the coil, oxygen sensor, injectors, and computer. Does your 94 have a splice like that? Being new to the board and reading through it, it seems these trucks had a lot of unprotected or poorly made splices.
In a day or so I will be dropping the tank or lifting the bed. Mine should have 12v at he pump.

it's the pump!
i just did mine and yes a 94 also
it's over 10 yrs old so change it
turn the key all the way forward
get down by the tank and without a doubt you wont hear the pump,

auto zone or advanced auto both carry them
was 165.00 in my area
the pump, fliter, is 1 whole assembly
and do yourself a favor when you change it
take the bed off and move it back a few feet,
i put card board around the rear bumped
set the front of the bed on the rear tires and the back over the bumper, dont forget to pull out all the tail light wires,
they drop right through easy as pie

if you just try dropping the tank
you'll be dropping it more then once

oww and after you get the pump in before you put the bed back on, make sure your gas guage is working properly, they are a pain in the A**
to get right

Update: Fixed. There was a broken wire in the harness about two feet from the tank. Have no idea why it was broken/corroded through. No other damage I could find, though. Should have done a continuity check first, I guess.
