Subject: transmission problem?? IP: Logged
Message: ive got an 89 and somethimes when i kill it and try to start it again the lights on my instrument cluster will dim and everything but the motor wont even try to turn over. i thought it might be the solinoid but i didn't wanna mess with crap unless i knew what the problem was. but i also thought it might be the linkage between my shifter and my tranny (automatic) because when i move it to drive and then shove back to park it starts in a flash. this is really starting to piss me off. any help would be great thanx.

I own a 2001 dodge quad cab 4x4.The problem I'm having is in the transfer case. When I put the vehicle in 4 wheel drive it makes a grinding noise like it wants to brake. I then take it out of 4 wheel drive and reverse back in to 2 wheel to make sure it desengaged out of for wheel but after I take of in 2 wheel drive I start to hear this knocking sound from under the transmission. If anyone has had any similiar problems I would really like their in put. I only have 43,000 miles on my truck and I already had to replace the water pump, as well as get the ball joints fixed. the recall covered the ball joints.

Message: rachel,
have you checked to see that your 4wd actually works when you put it in 4-wheel? you may have broken the chain in the transfer case. this could be from driving in 4-wheel on dry pavement, driving in 4-wheel at highway speeds. or even a faulty chain. but it sounds to me like a broken chain. in which case you would not have 4wd when you engage it.

I only used the 4 wheel drive once during a really bad snow storm up here in Las Vegas. But I was only going 20 miles on the road do to the snowy weather, other then that one time I have not used it since. But I greatly appreciate the advice. Do you think this is what could be making the clunking noise when driving? Also do you know how much replacing the chain if it's that would run? Any advice would help. I'm tired of pocketing money for this truck.
