Subject: Timing A 99 V6 Dak? IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know what the timing should be set at? Does anything have to be capped' plugged or disconnected before I put the timing light on? It had 75k and I'm wondering if the chain jumped. Rough idle and probably in need of a tune up.

Message: DON'T even bother putting the timing light on..
It is controlled by the computer..
Base setting is sensor at passenger side rear
of engine , in the bell housing just below the distributor..
What you probably need to do is clean the throttle body and the Idle Air Control ( IAC )
at the back of the throttle body..
Also check the PCV valve..

Message: Timing might be control by the computer, but a timing light can still tell many things. Worn parts and bad sensors can cause timing to be off or even fluctuate wildly. It is just like any other computer - Garbage in, garbage out.

Message: if you want to know if your chain is bad there is one really simple way to tell, pull the cap off the distributor and put a socket on the crank bolt and turn the motor counter clockwise. if the rotor doesn't turn IMMEDIATELY then you need a new chain because yours is stretched. in which case you will get a sluggish truck, bad mileage, and even a rough runner. dont worry about timing, you cant adjust it, the most you can do is about 4 degrees by modding your crank sensor.

Message: I just grabbed the fan support coming out of the block (behind the fan blades) with a big wrench and rocked it back and forth. If it gives some before moving, you need to replace the chain.

Message: I do alot of highway driving and the truck is pinging all of the time on 87 octane. I put 89 in it and it didn't help at all. I'll sell it before I put 93 in this little gas hog!

Message: salty, try changing your plugs to a colder heat range. also, try using some top engine cleaner like SEAFOAM. you could have carbon buildup in the combustion chamber that will make it hold more heat and not let the heat dissapate.
maybe a 180 t/stat.

Message: forgot one, it could also be the dreaded leaky belly-pan on the intake.

Message: Only 70k and problems already. I'll change the plugs and t stat when I get some time. I have run Seafoam a few times already. My old 440 had a belly pan on the intake. Is it prone to leaks?
