 Subject: 1987 3.9 carb tuning

My best friend's girlfriend has a 87 Dako (as they are sometimes called at the Dodge dealer I used to work at).
Under the hood you will find the 3.9L v6 with a little carb on top. It has 95,000 miles on it, and all of us (my best friend, his gf, and I) are quite sure it's time for some tuning.
Sadly, I have experience with only briggs and stratton carbs, my best friend is taking classes in mechanics but he knows nothing about carbs, and of course his gf just wants it to run as well as it can.
So, help me out here.

Find the tag on the carb and get a rebuild kit
it will come with instructions and a new needle
and seat that is probably leaking at 95,000 miles
After the rebuild replace the spark plugs they
may have fouled by now to get best resaults

My 1987 dodge dakota runs great at idle,but as soon as i hit the gas it dies out. Can anyboty help me fix it?
