Message: Gentlemen,
I have a 1990 premag. 239 V6, it being premag. means not has many after market parts exsist. But there are some out there. Mopar no longer has it's optional cam avalible for this engine. I did purchase a remanufactured engine. It has a .030 overbore, a cam reground to the optional mopar can specs, I had a Jett II perfromance calibration done, a set of Edlebrock headers, and a custom 3 inch exhaust with high flow cat and a flowmaster muffler. It was not real cheap but it does have a great sound and nice subtle lope. The normal specs on this engine are 125hp@about 4200rpm and 195lb/ft@2000 rpm. My Dakota is a reg cab/6ft bed 4wd, OD Auto with 3.92 axle.....I do not know what the power levels are now but I can attest that there is a sig boost between 1800 and 3500 rpm.....I run 31x 10.5 tires with no problems and got 19.6 MPG at 65 mph on my last trip to NC from Alabama hauling my Harley....I did have a Jimmy S-15 2dr with 5 speed (3.42 axle) and got 20 to 21 on the highway with it. Yes it had a 4.3 and though the hp to ci is better perhaps on a Mag V6 the real fact is there is no sub. for ci. At 190hp and 260lb/ft the 4.3 is much stronger at mid and top end. Now that is not saying it sets the world on fire either. These types of vehicles were not intended for that. I do know that my Dakota really pulls good from idle to 3500 rpm and in 4lo really pulls great plenty of power.
Well that is just this old soldiers thoughts and observations......good luck on your builds and yes if you have the time and talent or money the V8 is the way to go.....

Message: Personally I wouldn't even waste my time with a
premag V6. I've driven 4 cyls. with way more power.
