Subject: '87 4x4 Dakota Trans IP: Logged
Message: I've been doing some things to my '87 lately and I'm having some trouble with my transmission. Exactly which trans does my '87 4x4 have? A998? A999? I know it's only a three-speed with a lockup TC. Anyway, I adjusted the throttle linkage, as per the Haynes manual, and although it shifts better, I can't get the trans to kick down for passing. The mods recently made were: NOS MP 4-barrel intake and a 450cfm vacuum secondary Holley. I'm still tweaking the Holley but I've got the linkage all sorted out and working well (had to make some adapters to get the stock cable to reach as well as change to a heavier return spring). The throttle linkage for the trans reached the extra distance (thus the adjustment I had to make) but I'm still not sure if it's right. I followed what the Haynes said but the linkage just seems so "variable" down there at the trans. Any ideas or info will be appreciated. I'm trying to get this sorted out before I replace the SCC with my MSD hardware and install some later model exhaust manifolds and V8 Y-pipe(s).

Message: OK this is kind of the reverse way to adjust your trans.
tie the kick down lever on the trans all the way back,IF you have a little movement thats OK
now on the carb, with the rod off the carb, with full throttle open, adjust the rod/linkage to trans to fit the carb throttle,
now with this done the trans may not want to up shift until your doing 35mph or so from 1st gear to 2nd and from 2nd to drive to 55mph,
this can be fixed by backing the kick down rod adjustment off a little at a time until you get the shift points you like
remember the trans will not go into passing gear with speeds over 50-60mph[some trans 45mph]unless they have shift reprogramer or governor work
hope this helps

Message: Thanks Vern, I'll give this a try on my next day off. When you say to "adjust the rod/linkage to trans to fit the carb throttle" do you mean to adjust the linkage rod position so that the rearmost portion of the linkage slot is resting forward against the throttle peg (at WOT) WITH the linkage rod positoned in the trans lever in such a way that the trans lever is held fully rearward? Just checking.
Lastly, any idea on the transmission model in the '87 4x4's? I'm looking at a future rebuild and/or shift kit and need to know. Thanks!

Message: yes on linkage
it just a three speed, with out seeing it i can,t say for sure, but it should be a 904 with a lock up convertor, they do call it by a different no.? but a 904 internals are the same

Message: I've been doing some more work to the truck and I'm sorting through the vacuum lines. I've got most of them sorted out and connected in their "new" post-SCC positions. However, I've got a vacuum line going back to the transfer-case and another line coming back to vacuum distribution "block" above the brake booster that wasn't connected to anything. I traced the connected line back and it goes to what looks like a vacuum canister mounted just behind the transfer-case. There are a set of 4 lines that connect to some steel lines on top of case and appear to connect to the top of either the t-case or the tailhousing of the trans. I don't know what they're for or how they're supposed to be connected and I can't find any info in my Haynes or my '87 factory manual (it's for 2wd, not 4wd). Does anyone know how these are supposed to be connected or what they're for? Even a link to a site with the info would help. Thanks for your time and sorry for the long post.

Message: I guess I should've done a proper search first...Found the answer to my own question in the forum. Sorry for the long post.
One more trans related question, though. Since I've removed the SCC, what do I need to do to allow the converter to lockup. I've driven the truck a few times and I don't "feel" it kicking in. I'm willing to install a switch or relay arrangement to allow it to kick in, if needed. Any ideas? Thanks, guys.

Message: a toggle switch and some wire, positive feed wire to toggle switch[with key on]wire from toggle switch down to wire on trans that should do it.
