Message: ok. i have a 89 dakota 4x4 sport with 156 thou miles and i have a loud knockin noise. my buddy seems to think it is the timing chain hitting the cover or the torque bolts behind my inspection plate. any other ideas? also i get about 3 miles per gallon and i timmed my truck with a timming light but it wants to die and takes about 19 seconds to get up to like 40 mph. do i need a new engine? please help.

Message: It sounds like it may have jumped time. If its never been changed, it may be time to change the timing chain and set the position of the cam so that it is in time with the crank. If its jumped time, setting the timing by moving the distributer will not be enough to solve your problem.
Good luck

Message: plugged cat
map sensor
temp sensor
02 sensor
timing
plugs,wires,dist cap
all of these will cause poor mileage/power
the knockin noise needs to be narrow down to front or back of motor, there is several things that could cause this
lifter
timing chain
torque convertor bolts hitting inspection cover
rod or main bearings
spark knock-when the engine is under a load
when you timed your truck do you unplug the temp sensor on the front of the intake[driverside]?
if not you need too for the timing to be correct

Message: ok i took my timming cover off and my chain is really loose. i got a new chain. my dots on both s are together but the distributor is 180 degrees away from the number 1 spark plug. i found a metal piece sticking out and my teeth on the top sprocket was hitting it. that might be my clicking sound. but i have no clue what do the about the 180 degree off distributor.

locking from front of truck
Yes both marks togather dist will be 180 out
crank at 12 oclock
cam 12 oclock will put dist on #1 wire
you have crank at 12 cam 6 oclock
you can install this way and be fine

Message: the #1 plug should be marked on the cap but it should be toward the pass side of the truck. it should be marked on the cap though. and if its not go buy a new cap that is because yours must be severely out of date.
