Subject: 99 Dakota Failed CA Smog IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 Dakota 3.9 V6 Magnum @ 81600 miles that has failed CA Smog. Im getting 1500 NO(PPM)@25MPH AND 1600 NO(PPM)@35MPH 50 - 500 is Passing. I have had the plugs and wires changed but still fail. The O2 Sensors checks out on the diagnostic, I get good compression, The CAT is only 12,000 Miles old and my engine temp is 210F. The dealership has had my truck for 2 days and still they cannot figure out why it will not pass smog. Any suggestions?
Thnaks!
Steven

Message: Lots of things affect NOx reading:
Advanced ignition timing.
Bad EGR valve (but I believe 99 didn't have one).
Running engine a little too hot.
Carbon buildup in cylinders making it run hot.
Catcon (you've changed it).
Lean mixture, for whatever reason.
Needs tuneup (did you change ignition rotor and dist cap, too?).
I'm sure there are more.

"Ok, folks....Here is the result of smog check problem on my earlier post:
After new plugs, wires, cap/rotor filters, etc. It went in for a smog test> hc was high, co high(just in specs), it went to dealer (I will post it in the dealer forum)
back and forth.....they had the truck in for five weeks.....rebuilt carb, no change, new o2 sensor, no change, carb feedback solinoid, no real change (better not there yet) found intake floor jet missing under carb (EGR circuit) better still, still not happy. Took he truck home, had my local muffler guy look at the 'cat.......says it was the wrong one (changed a few years ago) ....too small, new one installed (the first reasonable price) went back to smog station......PERFECT!!!!
CO=.01 HC=less than ten (old reading was from 300 to 600)!!!
Why did'nt the dealer try the cat earley on?????????? FIVE weeks!!!!
We got SCREWED !!!! "
Newer catcons are 3-way, it could affect your NOx if defective or the wrong one. You may have replaced it, and then whatever killed the last one killed this, also.

Message: I Have a Feeling it may be the themostat. From what I can tell from research that The 99 Dakota should run @ 195F Degrees. So I am 15-20F Degrees to hot. So I am going to have the dealership put a 180F Thermostat on and change out the O2 Sensor and see what happens. FYI old catcon was replaced cuz it rattled like hell the honeycomb broke apart.

Message: As an fyi, never do an air induction cleaning within 24 (i recommend 48 hrs) before going to get an emission test. I know a guy who worked at midas and had alot of people coming to him to get air induction service done before going in for emission tests. It's pretty much a guaranteed failure.

Message: Hey Steve I don't think putting in the 180 thermo will do it. I just failed a smog check in California the other day. I also have a 99 Dakota 3.9. My engine was still running "hot" according to the shop. I'm going in for a diagnostic Tuesday. I'm hoping it's a simple fix like the cat. Mine is 3 years old and may not be one of those 3 way models people are talking about. I have a recent tune up and my O2s got changed out last June since they were originals and I wanted new ones. I'll let you know what happens here. My shop has said ever since they put in that dyno they have been failing alot more cars. I passed at this same shop with flying colors last time (before he had the dyno).
