Subject: spark plug heat shields IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone taken off those stupid heat shields that are around every single spark plug? Wondering what problems if any that I would have if I took them off. Time to do the old spring tune up and checking the plugs is next on the list. What is the easiest way to get those things off?

Message: Forewarning...I removed mine and the one closest to me on the left side when looking under the hood was rusted in pretty badly. It took 4 hours of twisting, prying, chiseling, and tugging before I finally got it to come out. I honestly thought I was gonna have to get my truck towed because I wasn't gonna get it and it was closed up to the point where the spark plug wouldn't be able to go back in. Other than that PIA heat shield, the other 5 weren't too difficult and it sure looks nicer.

Message: Idiot. I very highly doubt you're an engineer, unlike the one(s) that designed the shields and the truck so LEAVE THEM ON STUPID!

Message: They protect the boots from water splash and from heat. If you replace your wires often and don't drive through big puddles, you might never miss them. Otherwise, best to leave them.

Message: A lot of the guys who off-road their trucks have taken theirs off with no ill-effects either. Usually they'll gunk up with water and mud and are a real bitch to clear out when the time comes.
