Subject: Pop noise from wheel IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 dak 2wd v6 w/85k. I have noticed lately that when I am brakeing and turning right I hear a pop noise coming from the front right wheel of my truck. I was hoping this may not be a sign of my ball joints going out or a part of the steering system. Anyone know what this may be?????

Message: Probably upper ball joints, upper control arm bushing like daddio said, or a combo of both. I would lean toward the ball joints, and take it from me, do them yourself, or by a garage that uses ball joints WITH a zerg fitting. The hardest part is getting the rivets out, after that just replace them with grade 5 or 8 bolts and nuts.

Message: how can you check if it is the upper control arm vs. the upper ball joints?

Message: The easy way is to jack up the one tire like you are going to change it and push/pull on the top of the tire(if you can look at the upper ball joint as you do this). If you hear or feel any play, or a slight "thunking" sound, it is time for new ball joints.

Message: Well I jacked up the wheel but it didn't have any freeplay or make any noises... What then may it be? I have had some squeeking from the bushings on both front wheels. When that starts up I spray all the bushings down with penetrating oil. (I do spray all of them because I can't tell exactly which one(s) it is causing the squeek.)

Message: probably ball joints BUT if you have nerf bars it may be them as well. i had my ball joints replaced and they were bad sure enough. the next week i kept hearing a very similar noise but it was my nerf bars poping at the mounting sites, had to remount with rubber to make it stop...good luck

Message: I do not have nerf bars so that is out of the question. But on the other hand are you saying that even though my wheel doesn't have any play that the ball joints could still be bad on them??? I thought that was the big tale-tale sign.

Message: If it's the lower ball joints you will not notice any play when pulling on the wheel because the truck is pushing down on them. They could be shot and you wouldn't know. You could try jacking up the truck with the weight off the wheel and pry between the spindle and control arm to see if there is any movement. On a lower joint you are allowed some play, but not much. There should be no play on an upper joint, but once again you may not be able to budge it unless you take the weight off the wheels.

Message: The front spring needs to be compressed. Put the jack underneath the lower control are and the spring will compress which will allow you to move the wheel. It should move if you grab the top of the tire w/ one hand and the bottom of the tire w/ the other. You have to remove the spring tention from the upper and lower ball joints in order to correctly diagnose the problem.
