Subject: Warped rotors? IP: Logged
Message: My '04 QuadCab has been "shuddering" lately at the slightest touch to the brakes, and they are starting to squeal badly. The steering wheel vibrates slightly under excessive when normal brake pressure is applied. It's insane that the rotors are warped already, but they are..
I'd search for it but I'm short on time tonight.. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen with their '04 QuadCab? Has 11K miles on it..
Did your dealer replace the rotors under warranty? Or did they try the "wear & tear" crap? (wear and tear my a#@ @ 11K miles)
I'm planning on going in on my day off next week, just trying to get a heads up on what they might do (ie, make me pay for the repairs)
Thanks!

Message: The number one reason for warped rotors is torquing the lug nuts too tight (or unevenly). Most garages, dealers, and even the factory, will torque them with an air wrench over 150 ft-lbs, when spec is 85-95. I re-torque immediately upon getting home after service, or make them do it right.
It's worth it to invest in a torque wrench.

Message: you dont necessarily have to get them exact with a torque wrench, all you need to do is do it in the correct pattern and torque evenly and you will never warp a rotor. my rotors on my 93 have been warp free for 80k miles

Message: The factory rotors are prone to warping no matter how carefully you replace the wheel amd tighten the nuts. I always torque my nuts in 2 stages using the correct pattern and I still went through 2 sets of OEM front brakes.
After going through two sets of OEM rotors I settled for the el cheapo parts store rotors and pads and they haven't warped in over a year.
Something else to keep in mind is that the factory pad compound is incredibly hard and generates hot spots that warp the rotors. They made the pads so hard so the rims wouldn't get filthy with brake dust. This is a marketing decision. Going to a softer compound should help but your wheels will get dirty.
You might notice that some BMW's, Mercedes and other high end cars have really dirty fron brakes. This tells you two things. The owners are slobs and the pads are soft. Softer pads equals better braking and no warped rotors. The downside is that they need more frequent brake jobs.
