Subject: False codes?

Did a routine code check and got 17 and 15 (engine cold too long/thermostat or coolant sensor bad, and speed sensor). When I bought the truck a year ago it had these codes and I cleared them. The speedo and odometer work fine, and the tach only occasionally shows a very quick jump of less than 100 RPMs back and forth (not enough to be lockup). The indicated engine temperature is fine, always reads as expected. Has anyone else gotten these codes with no apparent issues? I get 19-20 mpg, so the code 17 isn't making it run too rich. Maybe an intermittent ground somewhere? Truck runs great.

The problem is as stated. What is YOUR problem?

I will be able to solve it, I simply asked if anyone else had encountered it. It is most likely a loose/intermittent connection, but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced it and found other causes.

And I'm flattered that you think I'm supposed to be an expert. I'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion, since my career is not automotive.

Maybe next post you'll have something useful to contribute.

I had a buddy that had a similiar problem which turned out to be moisture in one of the wire harnesses to the PCM, I don't know if that helped at all, but it is a shot in the dark:)

Could be the ECM connector, which is mounted on the right fenderwell. Also, I do pull the fuse for horn/tach if I'm not using the truck for a few days, as the tach draws 105 mA even with engine off (as designed!). Once recently I did start the truck and then plug the fuse in. But according to the FSM, only the tach is powered by this, and shouldn't trip a code, as the tach is downstream of the ECM as far as the tach signal, and there is no feedback. Likewise, pulling this fuse doesn't disable or affect the temperature gauge or signal.

Got 20.6 mpg on last tankful, so at least it doesn't seem to hurt anything by getting these codes.

the engine temp sesor that is plugged into the PCM ,, NOT the one that gives you the dash reading is worn out, and the speed sensor in the rear diff or on the rear wheel is worn and giving week voltage to the PCM.

There's only one temp sensor, "doh". It's next to the thermostat housing, and it provides both the gauge reading and input to the PCM.

Your wrong there bob there are 2 by the thermo
Alt side 1 wire guage
A/C side 2 wires engine temp to computer

Around $6 replace it they also caroad and do that

check the grounds engine to firewall back of motor
and comp engine ground just behind alt

The temp sensor is easy to change just remove
belt and unblt A/C pump and move aside and you
can see right down to the sensor

Well, I can't see s*** in there until I remove or slide the alternator and AC compressor aside. When I changed the thermostat last winter, I did see the 2-wire sensor on the driver's side. It was connected properly. Are you sure the 1992 models had this? My FSM only mentions the one sensor, and the schematics only show one. The 4-cylinders have the one-wire sensor for the gauge, and the 2-wire for electric fan operation; but mine is a thermal clutch fan and should not need a sensor.

Which one do you think is tripping this code?

All the mag motors have both sensors

the pass side
1 wire gauge sending unit and will not trip any
codes only runs dash guage

drivers side
2 wire engine temp sensor this one will trip the
17 code running to cold ya there a pain to get to
a lot of them the connection turns green and needs
to be cleaned but what you go through to get to it
I would just replace it

Yes if you remove the thermo housing you can get
in there to change it 9/16 deep socket
