Message: Went in to get my smog check today. Same place I went to last
time and passed with flying colors. Well now, he's got a dyno to
test me with. Oh boy. I passed everything but the dyno test.
The dyno measures you at 15 and 25mph. I failed the NO
measurment by a landslide. at 15mph I have 1278ppm with a
max allowable amount of 512. At 25mph I have 1107ppm with
a 765 max allowable.
I was running a 180 thermo and a step cooler set of spark plugs.
This is a 3.9 1999 Dak by the way. The only modified part on
the entire truck were the 1.7 roller rockers. Am I an idiot,
should I have switched out the rockers before testing?
I asked and the owner said he was failing a lot more cars now
that he had the dyno. At least he is a test and tune station so
I'm not caught up in that mess. Between this, the gun laws here
and our horrible real estate prices and lousy education system I
swear I'm moving to Oregon soon.

Message: damn that sux mark. Here in texas if you have an OBDII vehicle (96+), you just have to have the equipment and they do an on-board-diagnostic of your vehicle thru the port.
easy as that.
everything else that is less than 25 years of age and older than a 96 model, has to do the dyno roller. A lot of vehicles started failing when they started that a few years ago, here.

Message: I had a the same problem double the allowed NOX,
on my 93 Olds. I was told the nox forms at high combustion temperature and was probly running to lean. I was told to clean the mass air flow sensor. On the Olds the sensor part that sticks out in the throttle body looks like a light bulb
filament and was coated with the black stuff that
builds up in the throtle body. I carefully sprayed the filament with throttle body cleaner until it looked silver (used a magnifying glass).
the air flow cools the sensor, the dirt blocks
some of the cooling effect and the computer thinks the amount of air flow is less than it. actual is, and injects less gas then it should.
I don't know if this relates to the Dakota sensor
But it cut my nox in half and I just squeeked pass the emissions.

Message: Hmm. The only sensor I can clean is the IAS on the backside, which I did just prior to going in for testing. Well I'm going in for a diagnostic. I've done some searching on here, and there looks like there could be quite a few moles I could whack. So instead of going after a long line of parts I'll let the garage see what they can come up with. What a PITA.

Message: Nothing you did should raise NOx emissions. Has it been tuned up recently? Wires, cap, rotor, PCV? Carbon buildup can raise cylinder temperatures.
Some newer vehicles have 3-way catalytic converters that handle NOx and CO as well as HC. If yours is bad and under 80K miles, it's covered by federal warranty.

Message: Ok so it passed today. Needed a new catalytic converter, got
one of those three way models, they changed my coolant temp
sensor and regapped my .06 spark plugs (for MSD) back to .04.
Back to my great low numbers. Ok I don't hate California for
this, just some parts that went bad.
