Message: 2day i drove a durango 4.7v8, i almost cryed. that damn suv could woop on my 3.9 anyday, i had no idea the v8s were that much faster.
so question, i absolutly intend on keeping my truck, would it be better to swap a used 5.2 or try to make my v6 run like that. I understand mod for mod a v8 will always come out on top, and i also understand if u find a good deal on an engine a swap isnt that expensive. driving that truck has put me into v6 depression mode....crap

Message: The V6 can be made to run like that, just ask Larry from J&J Auto. The "easier" of the 2 solutions would be a swap. The "better" of the 2 depends on how you feel about doing the necessary work.
Are you more interested in a quick fix, or something that will take time and give you an opportunity to learn and I am sure provide alot of self satisfaction.

Message: Dont quite associate the 3.9 with "crap"
Remember this is a 318 with 2 cyl chopped off, same motor that is repetitive in derbies over and over again for reliability. As you may have seen there are several dakotas with well over 200k on them and still running great...
The 3.9L coupled with a good gearing could make for a fairly quick truck. This same motor in a newer ext cab 4X4 Dakota with poor gearing can make a dog out of itself. However still a great motor notorious for its reliablility

Message: Nothing compares with the power and tourque of a V-8. I dont't care what mods you do to a V-6. As for gas milg. My V-6,4x4,ext.cab,doesn't impress me. I have had V-8 that do just as good,if not better. My Uncle has a 2005 4x4 3/4 ton hemi that gets the same gas milg.

Message: well ace i would say there is some hope for you. the 3.9 can be made into quite the little runner with little work really. throw a bigger tb on it, adjust your injector sync, do the crank sensor mod, open up the exhaust with a high flow muffler and put a k and n filter on it and you will feel alot better about drivin a v-6. ive done all of that with the exception of the crank sensor and k&n...which are on my to do list, and my truck has really woke up. went from not bein able to squeek the tires to smokin em.

Message: if you do the mods i have listed you can get a well running truck for about 200 bucks. The k&n i am talkin about is just the drop in filter, the muffler should be no more then 100 and i got my tb for 40 bucks and i didnt even need to change the cable. Truck runs great and went from 16mpg to 19

Message: I got my tb from a local junkyard, i called around and found one for my year. it just so happened that at least a portion of them in 93 had the v-6 style cable, so i dont know if they all do, but mine did, so i could keep the stock cable. but if you call around you should be able to find one.

Message: I didnt notice a ton right away, but after the computer noticed it, it helped quite a bit. the other one that helped alot in conjunction with it was my flowmaster muffler and "highflow" cat. i am workin on makin a homebrew air intake for it, but i have to find the parts i need...up here the junkyards are still in three ft of snow...(i know i was in one today, definetely sank to my knees in snow)

Message: Hey steetdak93,
Where in Rhode Island are you from? I live in Pawtucket.
On the topic, I installed an F&B tb on my 2003 3.9 about three weeks ago. This has been by far the best mod I have done yet. I did have to reset the pcm because the truck wouldn't idle right after the install, but once I did there was a huge performance difference. If you can afford it I strongly suggest one to wake up a sluggish dak (not that mine was sluggish before).
I'm looking foward to warmer days so that I can install the jba headers I have for it. I bought them about 1&1/2 years ago and never got around to installing the (my mother got sick right after I bought them).
