I've had no luck finding a thread about this so I'll have to ask. My 99 3.9 has recently started experiancing a delayed start. It always turns over fine and it always starts, but it takes a few seconds longer than it should. Though I'd seek advise before it gets worse. Thanks!

Had the same problem with mine. Like vern said, check you fuel pressure. If you have a guage cool, if not, they are only about 35 bucks at a autoparts store. When you turn the key on (but do not start) the pressure should go to approx 45psi...and stay there, and not drop when the fuel pump cycles off. If it drops, either there is a fuel leak in the line...unlikely as you would probably notice it, the injectors are leaking by, or like my truck the fuel pressure regulator is bad...it sucks if the regulator is bad because you have to replace the entire pump module(about $210 new or you can get a refurbish on e-bay for between 120-180) Good luck!!!

Thanks guys. My son has the truck away from home for a couple of days, so I will have to wait to double check the answer to Vern. To check the fuel pressure, I assume I take the fuel line off at the carb and attach the guage? Is there a way to confirm it's the fuel pressure regulator or will I just have to replace it to find out? Where is the regulator located?
Thanks again. I appreciate the help.

Regulator is on the pump in the tank

there is a shrader valve on the fuel rail looks
like a valve stem on a tire that is where you
check presure

The only way to go on a pump replacement is a
master it comes with reg new pump and filter
but you do need to drop the tank to replace it

I would switch the relays around in the power
dist box under hood and see if it helps just
remember what you switched they are all the same
30 amp relays

ASD
Fuel
Starter
Fan
A/C

big squre looking items if it helps just replace
the one you switched out they have contact points
that burn and caroad inside

Drop the tank? Pull the box off, 8 bolts and four guys makes this an easy acces. job. As always the tank will have gas in it,and to get the lines of the tank. Make it easy on your self,as I did pull the box.

Thanks again all for the input. It's been a few months since my last reply and the only thing i've done about this so far is switch the relays around. That did not make any difference. The problem has stayed exactly the same since March.
In answer to Vern's question: Yes, the truck does start normally if I try it again after it has been running.
One other clue I have now is that the truck starts a little bit quicker on the first attempt(although still not normal)when I turn the ignition to the "on" position and wait 2 seconds until the fuel indicator needle engages and moves. So in another words, when i just get in and turn the ignition to crank the engine, the needle doesn't move for a couple of seconds.
I'm going to go have the fuel pressure checked, but does this still sound like the fuel pump? Is it normal for the fuel indicator needle to take a little while to activate?
Thanks again all,
The Garage Procrastinator

it sounds like you have the same problem i have, and i need help to. i have a 98 3.9 when i start it after it sits long enough for engine to cool down it turns over for a couple seconds longer than normal and ususally starts right up, i have had a few instances where it wont start up, but if i go to start it right after it has ran it will start up normal.
i dont know much about fuel pressure. i have checked it before. with the motor cold i put the guage on and turned the key to on and got about 20 psi. it cranked over for probably 3 seconds, and had 49 psi. i shut it off, and this is where i get confused, and the pressure starts to drop back to about 20 psi. i dont know if thats what is supposed to happen or not. and when i turned the key back to the on position, it stayed at about 20 psi. i dont know what the readings mean. any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

and just recently when i drove home from work and put the truck in park, it idled way lower than normal. it was idling about 500 rpms, where normal rpm is about 750. it has done this only a couple times. i am stumped. all help is appreciated.

thanks
Jeremy

When the fuel pressure drops off dramatically right off the bat, that means that either you have a fuel line leak(you would see/smell this), your injectors are leaking(engine flooding)or your pressure regulator is bad. As it was said before, you have to replace the ENTIRE assembly(pump, filter, and regulator) they run about $180-$210. Drop the tank or like I did(had the same problem) remove or push back the bed.

Advance auto parts. Python Injection Inc. 748575M for 156.99 and Master E7114M for 228.88(sorry it was $210 a month ago!) Unless you have the 20 gal tank and it is 218.88 for the Master.

Hey guys,

I have 97 3.9, and I am having pretty much the same symtoms with the hard start,BUT...my idle is very erratic. It used to hang around 750ish normally but now it fluctuates from 500 or a bit over 1k. Sometimes it will stay in between those RPMS but rarely. Its usually one extreeme or the next.
Does this sound consistant with a bad pressure regulator? Whats your take guys?

Thanks for any help.
Mac
