Subject: Code 51 IP: Logged
Message: OK, I posted a few weeks ago about my '91 Dakota 5-speed 2 wheel drive V-6 gas milage. It wasn't too bad (15-16 city 19 maybe 20 highway) but I was getting a code 51. Well, I went ahead and changed the oxygen sensor with a Bosch from Autozone. I unplugged the old, unscrewed it, put the new one in, plugged it in, changed the plugs and wires, reset the computer. All codes went away then the code 62 came back and now the code 51 is back as well. I have code 12, 51, and 62 showing up, would something else throw a 51 besides the oxygen sensor, or should I have Autozone reset the codes? Any thoughts are appreciated. The truck runs fine so I'm about ready to just ignore it.

Message: code 51 can only be from the oxygen sensor, i am not sure what 62 is, 12 is just because you unplugged the battery. as far as the oxygen sensor reading a lean condition it can be an egr problem as well. you might need to replace your egr valve. that emissions loop is tied in and can cause your oxygen sensor to read different. and that lean condition does change your mixture and will affect your mileage. (made me get 8mpg city)
so i would check out the egr valve

Message: I've heard you can pull the ERG out and clean the passageway. Is there any way to tell if the EGR is still good or if its shot?

souds to me like you have a bad connection or
bad ground
clean these
engine to fire wall
engine ground located behind alt
disconnect batt turn key to start for 1 min
shut key off reconnect batt and try again
sometimes the only way to clear the EMR 62 code
is with a scanner
EMR engine maintainance reminder
Auto zone free scan

Message: Thanks Larry,
Cleaning the grounds seems easy enough, as mentioned earlier, the truck seems to run good now but these annoying codes won't go away. I'll try cleaing the 2 ground locations, reset the computer and see if 51 goes away, I'm not too worried about the other two codes.
