Subject: Auto trans problem.... IP: Logged
Message: I've gone through the board and used the search and haven't found a post that has the same problem I'm having with my 92 Dakota, 3.9 2wd with A500 auto trans. The trans does not shift into first gear when you put it in drive, or stop at a stop sign. It feels like it's taking off in second, and if you nail it, it will downshift into first. You can manually drag it into first and it works fine. Trans has 122K, was flushed about 20K miles ago (before I got it), and I did a fluid and filter change with no difference in the problem. When it was flushed, they used Dexron, I replaced as much as I could with ATF+3 but I don't see what difference that would make, although I realize it can make a difference on a lot of things. I checked the TV cable and readjusted it, and made sure the TV arm was free and the spring was in place and returning it to the forward position, which it was. I (and a couple of Chrysler mechanics) are stumped...I thought my 3.9 was just a dog til I realized it was not taking off in first- amazing what a little more torque multiplication can do for you. Now I need to make it so it works 'automatically' like it's supposed to...any experience on this out there?

Message: Justin, if I'd just had this tranny redone, they'd be getting it back...if they gave me problems about it, they'd get it back like Discount Tire gets their tire back from the unhappy old lady- through their front window! Unfortunately, mine isn't just redone, so I don't have anybody to blame...but if I'd paid for it to be redone, then they'd be doing it again til it was right.
