Hey, anyone know exactly where the heat riser valve is on the dakota? I am not finding any information in my Haynes manual. Anyone ever changed or adjusted one?

The heat riser valve is located on the drivers side between the bottom of the exhaust manifold and where the exhause pipe goes out. I do not think you can adjust them and it looks like a pain in the a$$ to replace. I wired mine open because it was rattling alot. For those of you who not know what a heat riser valve is:

A heat riser valve is:

A control valve between the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe on one side of a V8 or V6 engine that restricts the flow of exhaust causing it to flow back through the heat riser channel under the intake manifold. This aids fuel evaporation and speeds engine warm up. A heat riser valve stuck open will slow engine warm-up and may cause hesitation and stalling when the engine is cold. A valve stuck in the closed position will greatly restrict the exhaust system and cause a noticeable lack of power and drop in fuel economy.

They dropped them in 1992 - my FSM mentions it, but in late 91 they got rid of them. Supposedly the multi-port fuel injection made it unnecessary.

Well then, I guess it's not a heat riser valve that is making that rattling sound. If they dropped them in 1992 then my truck doesn't have one. I'll have to search elsewhere for that stupid rattling sound...

Could also be that the heat shield on the catcon is loose. They often rot around the mounting bolts.

The cat is gutted. I've removed many heat shields. Sounds like it could be coming from the tranny. Either the clutch, tranny, or catalytic converter which is gutted completely. Could there be a piece of loose metal in the tranny or clutch? I have no problems shifting at all.

I was told it could be the throwout bearing but my truck makes a sound either in neutral or when I am off of the clutch. Some people say A throwout bearing makes a noise with the clutch pedal in... So I don't know, I am going to check it out once I get a new clutch.

Throwout bearings make more noise with the clutch out than in, whether in neutral or not, so that could be your issue.

this is old school but.............
Take an old broom stick cut it in half, hold one end to your ear, and the other end to different areas of the engine compartment and parts, to locate the source of the rattle, believe me you will locate the problem in record time.....
