Message: I started my 2001 dakota v-6 yesterday and immediately got code 442-detected leak in evaporative system. I assume this is part of the emissions system, but where do I start to look for the trouble? Is this serious? Can I service or is this a computer problem?

Message: Your evaporative emissions system I believe takes the fuel vapors from your tank and sends them to the intake manifold to be burned off, if im right it has nothing to do with your exhaust system. Where I am in CT sometimes I can smell gas odors around the tank on cold mornings. Also, the first time I scanned it (on a cold day) it wouldn't complete the evap emissions system check. In the manual they say these systems are designed never to fail, however there is a valve that shuts off the system in case of a rollover, and it can get stuck on a cold day. Hope this helps.
