Message: jay, you don't have to buy a CAI.
First, get the K & N drop in air fliter.
Second, take that stupid horn off the stock airbox.
Third, remove the flap on the passenger side of the radiator that is right in front of the airbox.
For a muffler, i bought a $20 cherry bomb turbo muff, 2 clamps and a straight piece of 2.5" exhaust pipe and replaced that factory muffler. total cost = 25 bucks. low rumble @ idle & sounds good 'til about 3K rpm. you can try that if you don't like it, you only lost 25 bucks and then you can spend about $100 on a flowmaster.
like i said earlier, search a little. throttle response - TPS adjustment.

i think what intense means by "like year" is get one for any 3.9 dak between 1997 & 2003 as they are basically all the same design, affectionatley known to dak owner's as "GEN III"

Message: if you get a FIPK.. get one for a like year 5.2/5.9
1997-1999 had one version and 2000+ had another.
it's suppose to be fore a V8 but it still works. I had one on my 1998 and know of many others that have used them with doing nothing to them.

Message: Thanks Larry,
I mentioned a list of mods that you posted some time back. Its nice to know that your here to help a guy thats just starting out.
Jay,
I also have a 2003. There are plenty of mods you can do to it. I've been working on mine since right after I bought it new. So far I have an Airaid intake (bolts on in about ten minutes), I removed the flap near on the passengers side of the radiator (free mod that allows coooler air into the intake), flowmaster 70 2.5 in 2.5 out (not too loud),and an F&B TB (installed this week). So far the best mod was the tb. I have a set of JBA headers that I haven't installed yet. I'm thinking that my next mod (after the headers) is going to be 1.7 roller rockers (probablt hre crowers). All of these parts are listed for the 2003 (I started buying in 2003). If your not comfortable with the wrench, start with the mods that do not require as much skill to install. The intake was very easy to install, the TB had instructions included that my wife and/or kids could have followed (she's not mechanically inclined and my older kid is only seven). Sorry for the long post. Good luck modding your truck, but be warned, once you start doing mods it becomes addictive.

Message: hey "jared", ive got an 03 dakota looking to get the JBA headers. how much were they roughly, are they worth the money?? and the air raid intake, is it specifically for the 2003 3.9 or as listed above "there all the same", pick one up for the 5.2 or 5.9 application.

Message: bp82gt,
The airaid intake is listed for all three. It uses the factory airhat and flex tube so I don't think it makes a difference which enjine is in the truck, as long is its not the 3.7 or the 4.7. From what the instructions said, there are no modifications needed unless you have cruise control (I do not). I bought the jba's a while ago. I paid about 425 for them with ceramic coating. I have not put them on yet because I've been working on my house during all of my spare time. I've been under major construction for the last year (I gutted the entire second floor of my house).
What model is your 03. Mine is a club cab SXT with a 5 spd.
