ASD relay? Swap out the relay with the other one in there and try it again. Check harness to be sure that it is seated. Check cam-position sensor. NO spark + NO gas pretty much points at the SMEC or the auto-shutdown relay. If the ASD is not dead, it's doing its job and swittched off the primary ignition voltage and the fuel pump. The only input sensor I can think of off hand to check is the CPS. I have read posts here that there is a harness under the relays that can get wet and corrode. What's been going on with the truck? Any recent service, accidents? New Computer (SMEC) could also be defective or incompatable.

This sounds exactly like what happend to my 94 Dak. Same set up 3.9 w/ 5sp. Did the same thing was running fine then jsut shut off while it was warming up one night. Wouldn't start after that. I spent two days checking a bunch of stuff. FInally i found the auto shut down relay was bad after I swapped it out for the ABS relay. Then the truck fired right up. I know you said you checked them but it might be worth swapping them around again just to be sure.

Good luck with it.

about a foot back from the power dist box under
hood in the wire harnass there is a red wire that
goes to 3 smaller wires

Fuel
Ign
Comp

check pin 3 power all the time
pin 9 on off with key
be sure batt is connected when you check these and
you can plug and unplug the obd1 system with batt
connected and it will not harm the comp its just
like disconecting the bat pin 3 power all the time

on comp plug unplged top left #1 left to right
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,

If this is bad nothing will work it will show no
codes even with scanner and the scanner should
read not comunicating

the scanner did say not communicating. and all the relays were fine. the problem was (after i bought a new (used) computer), the splice about a foot from the relay/fuse box. All red w/white wires Yes 1 feeds puel pump 1 feeds coil 1 feeds computer. there was atotal of 4 wires. The splice was totally powdered copper. Respliced it it works great..........Anyone looking to buy a used computer (i'll guarantee it works)?? $150.00 .......u pay shipping .

I'm having the no spark no fuel syndrome on my '90 Dakota and I'm searching for this splice. What exactly is the "power distribution box"? Does my '90 3.9 auto have it? Left or right side of engine comp?

Scott,

It's probably on the driver side mounted to the side of the fender. It's the black fuse / relay box in the engine bay.

There will be a lot of wires running out of it, wrapped up. you 'll need to unbolt the box from the fender, unwrap the wires. You'll find 3 red/white wires spliced into 1 red/white wire. Redo that splice, solder is preferred.

Thanks, Dan M, for a timely reply. you saved me from digging too far into a freshly rewrapped harness. I just cleaned it up about a month ago- the old tape was frayed and dryrotted. Other '90 base model automatic 2WD 3.9 owners take note- my wiring appears to be different. After going cross-eyed looking for red and white spliced wires, I traced the primary positive ignition coil wire(wt/bk) to find it spliced with 4 grn/bk wires. 1 goes to the ASR, 1 to the fuel pump and 2 head back toward the SMEC. I THINK this is the splice you told of. I could not locate red and white. Also, the wires come out of the power distribution box in two bundles and go UP to the main east-west bundle @ the top of the fire wall. Anyway, this splice was is in perfect condition and aparently not the cause of my problem. I'm off to try another coil, as I beleive NAPA sold me the wrong one. If that doesn't get my truck going I guess its time to throw a reman SMEC at it. I've replaced the fuel pump, ASR, FPR, pick up and coil. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I went through 3 weeks trying to get mine to
start. I did everything everyone said could be the
problem. The last thing left was the crankshaft
positioning sensor. The wire had been burnt in
half. Replaced the sensor , and it fired right
up.Hope this helps someone.
