Subject: Help on stalling, again IP: Logged
Message: 93 3.9 4x4 Auto Tran. Started stalling occasionally at any speed for no apparent reason about 6 months ago. No problem with idle or stalling at rest. At first would just start back up with no problem. After a couple of months it now takes about 1 minute then it starts back up. Did basic tune up and the wire links, etc with no change. Back in Dec. was suggested to replace ASD relay which I did and thought had it fixed, no stalling for almost a month. Started stalling again so replaced the similar relays in the Fuse Box including ASD one more time. Stalled 2 days later. Today when it stalled as I was sitting there waiting for the obligatory 1 minute time to pass tried the self diagnostics to get an Engine Code. No check engine light at all. All other electrical systems appear to work fine. After a minute or so check engine light was finally showing so I knew she would start and it did. Standard 12 (electrical power disconnect) is only code thrown. Totally frustrated, anyone have a clue?

Message: try checking the splice underneath the fuse block under the hood. here, i'll post the previous post that explains it:
"Right below the underhood fusebox, about 8" down the harness is a splice (#115), from that splice, it powers the PCM, Fuel Pump, and Coil. All four wires are Red/white, one comes from the fusebox, two go right back up to the relays, and the fourth goes the opposite direction to the PCM. You will have to unbolt the fusebox, pull it out of the way, and cut open the tape on the harness to find the splice.
I guess what happens is that water gets into the fusebox, drains down the harness, and eventually corrodes the splice into green powder (oxidized copper). You cannot tell if it is bad by looking at it, you will have to cut the tape off of the splice and inspect the connection. If you see and green or white residue on the connection under the tape, it has started to go bad and needs to be re-done (preferably by soldering).
This problem can be very intermittent, sometimes just a single miss while cruising down the highway, sometimes just a long cranking time, mine was even sensitive to temperature (28-40F) and high humidity. The problem in my 94 Dak occurred intermittently 30+ times and over $1000 in parts over a year

Message: I looked for the splice 3 months ago and the joints looked OK so did not cut it out as I was not totally sure which one it was. When I mucked around with it must have created a better connection than what existed before and then over the last 2 months became unreliable again. This time thanks to your details I cut out the 3 wires and pigtail. The solder joint looked OK and there was no corrosion visible. When I stripped the wires to tin them (not easy to do at 14 deg. but at least it was above zero) they were covered with green corrosion on the surface. Even after cleaning with emery the flux smoked pretty bad once it got up to temp it was so dirty. I’ll know pretty soon if that is the problem and once it warms up I think it worth while to redo the runs down from the fuse box. Almost hoping it was the PCM and gives me the excuse I needed to get a Mopar PCM but can’t find one for a V6 93 anymore since they quit manufacturing them. Should do the third paint job and third weld on the door hinges instead I guess. Hoping to get another 100K and 10 years with some luck. Thanks!

Message: Anyone know of any sites with pictures on the splice underneath the fuse block? I am having an issue where my 95 3.9 Dakota doesn't want to start but acts like a bad battery even though I have had it checked and is AOK.

Message: I will be doing the splice again when it warms up, had a hard time getting the heat shrink to seal so just taped over the joint after I soldered it. 20 years in Enginerooms with the Navy and sealed everything with RTV there, can't believe I'm out of it now. I will take pictures when I redo it, would have helped me a lot but 93dak4x4 got me to it. Under the friction tape are 3 wires (red w/white strips which feed down from the fuse box with a pigtail splice to a 4th that runs toward the cab. Mine had a red heat shrink tube on it and after removing it all looked good and joint was tight. It was the wires inside the insulation that were oxidized. Feel a lot better after I replace the runs back up to the fuse box, bet they are ugly the whole way up. Runs a whole lot better now and hasn't stalled yet.
