Subject: Roller rockers? IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone, I had a question. Are there any difference between the crower roller rockers for the 3.9 v-6 and the 5.2/5.9 v-8's? My buddy bought a set of 1.7's form truck performance.com for his 99 ram with the 5.2 but he doesnt want to put them on now since he might get rid of the truck. He would sell them to me for $225, would this be a possible swap out? ive read on here that the 3.9 is just a 5.2 with #1 and #8 cylinder hacked off but is the drivetrain the same?

Message: Crower has different part numbers for the 3.9 and the 5.2 roller rockers. Here is what Huges Engines says are common swapable parts:
Some of the most obvious examples of interchangeability are the rocker arms, lifters, pushrods, timing chains, pistons, rings, valves, valve springs, retainers and in a slightly modified version the cylinder heads, camshafts, intake manifolds, throttle bodies and cold air intakes.
I run the 1.7 Crowers. At first I ran just the rockers. After bending a valve and blowing off the valve spring which damaged the rockerarm, I went with the longer crower pushrods and the guideplates. And after having my heads rebuilt, I am glad I went with the longer pushrods and guideplates.

Message: what happened steve? i understood that these crower 1.7's could run up to 5500 rpm with no probs. do you go over that?
just curious. i may want to sell mine instead of install them.

Message: I think that the mounting studs are the same for both engines, 3/8". I think that i will try them out, hopefully everything will work out, though i'm not really looking forward to depening the baffles on the valve covers. But if the swap turns out ok, it should be worth the extra couple of ponies!!
thanks for the replys

Message: The V6 and V8 both use the same crowers of corse
the number is diff one set has 12 and 1 16 daa
6 and 8 cyl
yes they will bolt right in just have 4 left over
Just lay the covers on a towel on the floor take
a short 2X4 and knock them down be sure to leave
the ends open 1/8 to 3/16 so the oil can be put in
the vent and pcv work
The top of the adjuster nut will hit if this is
not done takes about 5 min each to do

Message: Daddio, I was tached up at 4500 when it blew the spring off. I had about 20K on my rockers. It could have been a weak spring, or something else. either way I decided to add the longer pushrods and the guideplates. I have about 5K on the head rebuild and everything seams to be running fine. I don't think it had anything to do with the Crower rockers.

Message: Just to back up what Larry said, I followed his instuctions on my v6 Dak, I had no problem with the installation. I knocked the baffles in with a 2x4 and measured how down I knocked them in, about 3/8 of an inch. I pryed each end of the valve cover open slight with a small screw driver so that the PCV valve to work. I have about 23,000 miles on them without any problems. I have rev'ed it to the point it hit the limiter with no problems.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: What those numbers mean is, for every .001 inch lift of the cam lobe, the rocker will open the valve .0016 inch, or .0017 inch 1.6-1.7.
The factory uses 1.5 rockers, so what happens is you wind up with more valve opening than with the stock rockers. That means the valve is opening more for more air and fuel to enter the cylinder, providing more POWER.
I hope that helps,
good luck
