Subject: 3923 plug question IP: Logged
Message: I have the light pinging problem in my 2001 3.9 six cylinder engine with 5 speed manual and was wondering if I should get the copper core or the more expensive platinum plugs for my truck. How many of you are using these plugs and are you getting satisfactory performance and gas mileage with them? The plugs were the only thing I was going to change from stock recommendations. Thanks for your help!

Message: i was using the copper core, but even with stock gap i had a rough idle, so i got the platinums and it runs smoother now. i would say that im satisfied with them. im not sure i noticed much gain on gas mileage, maybe 1, 1.5 mpg more or so, so not much there. all in all, they just make a difference in idle, a little more mileage, and they would probably help your pinging problem. there was another number autolite plug you could go with but i can't remember the number, 5424 or something like that maybe? if you get em at walmart or something the little plug selector computer should be able to tell you. but i personally would go with platinums instead of coppers, but keep in mind that i've got a few mods. it's really just your choice, IMO. good luck.

Message: stock heat range reg plug

extended tip 5224
If your getting a slight ping drop 1 range
3923 gap .035 to .040
AP3923 plat tip gap .040 to .045
a small vac leak can also crate a ping
look here for more ideas

Message: Dumb question, but what does this pinging actually sound like? I don't think I'm getting it, but I have 3923's and Superchips installed, so its pretty important that I can recognize it if it happens in the future.

Message: I've never heard it, but from what I've been told:
1.) You'll know when you hear it
2.) Like BB's are bouncing around in your engine
