Subject: Backfire on Acceleration

Message:
I have 92 Dakota with 3.9 L V6. WHile engine is still cold, a quick acceleration will result in backfire and almost cut-out. This goes away once the engine is hot. The timing looks to be very advanced (using timing light). It also gets bad gas mileage. It also lacks power and no computer codes are set.

The engine was recently rebuilt. The distributer was sync'd. Injectors were sent out for cleaning. Coil, wires, ign cap, fuel filter, O2 sensor, idle speed motor and muffler are all new. Crank sensor was broken (at mounting point) and epoxied back together. Map, charge air, coolant, and throttle position sensor was reused. There is no cat converter.

Can anyone give me a clue??? Is it possible to have the flywheel/driveplate installed backwards???

Thanks in advance
Steve

Sounds like it is running lean when it is cold. You can not install the fly wheel / drive plate backwards. It has one hole offset. It would also hit the block. You should replace the crank sensor. Just make sure the new one doesn't hit the flywheel.

If it were me Id replace that Crank sensor since it was broken.. If that doesnt solve the problem its a timing problem ;).
