Message: OK.
In December I replaced my tired old 3.9 with a reman from Recon. I also replaced the entire ignition system including distributor, new coolant temp sensor, MAP sensor, IAC motor, completley rebuilt tranny. The intake, throttle body, rails & injectors were swapped from the old engine. Now, heres my problem. When I first got it running the timing was off and every time I started it, it would run like crap until I turned it off and started it agan. Then it would run fine until the engine warmed up. Then it would start missing very erratically at idle. I had a shop sync the timing correctly, and this fixed the starting problem but not the missing at idle. Since then, I have done the following:
Checked for vacuum lines leaking & fixed 3
Re-torqued intake bolts
replaced EGR valve
replaced O2 sensor
checked plugs and gaps
checked plug wires
cleaned my K & N twice
I've gone through multiple tanks of different octane fuel, from multile stores, so I don't think it is bad gas. The truck does not have a catalytic converter (hasn't had one for 4 years actually). The only mods to the engine are the K & N, a 180 t-stat, and a 40 series flowmaster with no cat. Now heres the kicker. The other day I "accidentaly" drug a hole right in the middle of my cross over pipe, nder the tranny. Of course this huge exhaust leak caused me to loose power, BUT, it also almost completley elliminated the missing. That is what prompted me to change the EGR & O2. Those helped very slightly it seems, but this thing has me stumped.
(By the way, Im not getting a check engine light at all)
Could it still be the timing? Or mabe the injectors are clogged? I'm going to replace the fuel filter this weekend and see if that helps.
Sorry for the novel, but I'm going uts trying to figure this out. Thanks in advance.

Message: I just read a couple of other posts with similar problems, so tonight I'm going to look at the fusible link by the underhood fuse box, and try to test the Crank sensor.

Message: Dude, I got the smae exact problem. I cut the cat off and it ran better.....for about one day. Then it started to get bad again. I got all new sensors and parts. I'm having a new computer put in. Thats the only thing my mechanic can figure out. And keep in mind that it's been to three different mechanics. I'll let ya know if that does the trick. Everyone told me to put all new sensors. I did and "PUFF" there goes my wallet. Computer probs are rare, but can happen. I'll let you know what happens in a day or two. Bye the way, mines a 93 3.9 also.

Especially since you have all that new stuff.

Message: Definatley let me know how the computer swap turns out. I haven't reset the computer yet. I'm gonna try that this weekend, and put in the new fuel filter. To reset the comp, I just unhook the battery for about an hour right?

Message: I think I've got the same problem. My v6 92 dakota has problems starting, then runs fine, but as soon as it is warm the backfiring starts.
I thought about changing the distributor before I check and change all the sensors or the computer. Has anyone tried changing the dirstributor yet?
Would this help?

Message: OJ, yours sounds like a timing issue, or maybe the pickup coil in the distributor. If you do change it, MAKE SURE that you mark the orientation and put it in EXACTLY right. You can't adjust the timing by rotating the distributor. It has to be in perfect. I found that out when I replaced mine.
Three.9HP, That sux that you wasted 3 bills for nothing. i'm going to be working on the truck this weekend, so I'll let you know what comes of it.

Message: Try changing the temp. sensor. But get a genuine mopar sensor. Never get aftermarket sensors for these truck. Their bad about shatting the bed. It's only about $13 or 14 dollars and cean really screw your truck up. Good luck.

Message: I just found out what was wrong with mine. The distributor gear and bushing was bad. Check my heading "My dak keeps fouling plugs" and see if you got anymore symptoms like mine did. 3.9L's are very bad about warping or wear and tear on the dist. gears. Good luck!!

Message: Well, no luck so far. Fuel filter didn't do anything, and I checked the problematic wires coming from the underhood fuse box but they were fine. I had my distributor gear out when I swapped he engine and it looked fine. My truck is dong the opposite of yours Three.9HP. It runs fine until it warms up, the misses like crazy at idle. Runs fine up above say 1200 RPM. It never tries to die though while it's idling. It'll sit there for as long as you want and just miss. No backfiring either. I found a sheet with some notes on it from when I took it back to the shop after they did the timeing for them to fix the missing. One note says "11 - no crank signal" I'm guessing they got this from a scanner, because the C.E. light hasn't went off at all. Could this mean that the crank pos. sensor is bad?
