Message: Actually your Dakota is 6500lb rated.
Trailer hitches, get a Drawtite, Curt or Reese Class III, IV or V.
Generally if its over a certain weight, your state might require trailer brakes (electric is great) and that adds to the cost of installation by $100 or so. Up to 3,000 you'll be fine suspension wise, but will sag in the rear abit. Over that I'd look into weight distributing hitch systems or progressive rate helper springs. Also make sure your tires are able to handle the extra loading. I tow a 3000lb trailer quite a bit and it sags a little and still can cruise at 90 without problems (although thats not recommended ;) )

Message: I pull a utility trailer w/ my dirtbikes on it with my 97 6cyl 4x4 and I can't get over 65/70...the trailer creates too much drag and it's sort of rough to handle. Might wanna consider how much drag that trailer will create as well as weight.

Message: Your v6 is definitely not rated for 6500 lbs. Don't know where RPRacing got that idea but he is sadly mistaken...

Message: I tow a small pop up traier with mine. It weighs about 1200 pounds empty. With gear, food, the wife and two kids, and a bed load of firewood add about another 1000 pounds. It tows ok. It gets a little sluggish on the grades. I would not suggest towing much more that 3000 - 3500 pounds with a v6 if your going to encounter any real hills.

Message: I have 98 V6 Sport with 5 speed and I believe they are rated at around 4500lb. Saying that, I have towed my 2000 Isuzu Trooper on the tow dolly (4800lb truck + 600lb dolly) not a very good combination. Was able to go about 45 mph. No problem to pull or stop but way to much sway. I have also had about 1500lb in bed and about 3500lb on the trailer also with not much problems, exept front end pointing into the sky. They are good little trucks and will pull almost anything, but you have to be carefull. usually it is not the pulling that causes problems, it is stoping.
