Message: 94 with 140k miles. What front end parts are likely to be worn
and need of replacement?
What brand/source of parts?
Can I do the work in my driveway?
What special tools?
How can I replace shocks without a spring compressor?
Or are they available for use from parts stores?
BTW, Advance Auto has Monroe rebates $20-$80.

Message: obviously you dont have a clue how your suspension works. 94 dakota has no springs to compress. your shocks you can get wherever you want. as far as front end parts being warn out it depends on the condition of your truck, i have 133k on mine and need to change nothing right now. so its up to you to figure out. as far as being able to do your own work...well, can you?

Message: I would look at (depending if you are 4x4) control arm bushings, ball joints, hub assembly, tie rod ends, Pittman and idler arms, and steering gear. The half shafts on 4x4 front ends will get pretty loose past 100k miles too. You could do all this at home with air tools(compressor, impact wrench w/>250ft-lbs, 3/8" air ratchet, socket set) But you also need a bench vise, air chisel and Ball Joint press kit to help R&R the control arm bushing and the ball joints. Shocks are easy and you need no special tools or even a jack to replace them. Sway bar bushings and cab mount bushings are also drying out and rotting and should be looked at. After all this you need an alignment. Your new front end will make a big difference in handling and safety.

Message: Just looking around here I ran into this. I have a 94 dak 2WD that I rebuit the front end on about 5 years ago. I replaced the upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, shocks, upper and lower control arm bushing, wheel bearings, and sway bar bushings. I didn't "need" to change all the bushing but as long as I had it apart I up graded to poly bushings. And YES I did use a spring compressor to get the spring out because I DO have coil springs in the front. And technically torsion bars are a type of spring, even though they are not a coil spring. You can do it without a compressor if you are realy carefull by using a floor jack under the lower control arm. If your bushings are in good shape and depending on how much you are doing this job can be accomplished in a long Saturday. Like was stated above get it aligned immediatly after this.
Good luck

Message: i forgot about the 2wheel drives havin springs in the front, my bad, but torsion bars are not springs they are a torsionally loaded rod with a high value of yield stress and can be elastically loaded repeatedly without failure or yield.

Message: I just replaced some parts on the front suspension of my 95 4x4. They included:
- replace axle - easier/cheaper than replacing torn bushing.
- shocks
- control arms
- pitman (actually replaced 2-3 months ago)
