I've got a 98 Club Cab with a 3.9 V6 and manual transmission. I really like the truck, but recently purchased a new boat. The boat and trailer weigh 3,500 LB's. I was wanting some additional power for towing, and I was thinking of trading my 98 and getting a 2005 with a V8 and automatic, but they won't give me squat for my super clean 98 Sport, Flame Red, fairly new Michelin tires, with 94K, ($3,500). I wanted a bit more power, and I thought, hey, what about installing a free flowing exhaust, larger throttle body, and what other recommendation? Maybe a set of headers? What kind of increase could I expect from bolt on items? I really didn't want to get into rebuilding the engine, which is tight and in excelent condition.

if you dont feel comfortable digging in your motor like that. try superchips power programmar they have a tow setting.

I thought the 3.9 already has roller rockers from the factory? Where can you get the new chips?, and how difficult is it to install?

the 3.9 has roller lifters and a roller cam, the rest of the valve train is just plain standard. the 1.7 rr will give you a decrease in mass and friction and increase lift of the valves to help with power and make that red line a little safer. throttle body is the first thing i recommend along with a free flowing cat and muffler. go to a 180 deg thermostat and install a tranny cooler for that boat of yours.

if you've got 3.55 gears go to 3.92's or 4.10's it will pull a lot better.

superchips are very easy to install u just plug it in under you stering wheel and push the buttons you want. you can get them alot of places i would try to find a local speed shop in your area they might have them cheaper. a friend of mine got one for his hemi and it by far was a exellent investment!! the biggest thing these things do is recallibrate your torqe management. online these things run 300 to 350+ my friend went to a local speed shop and got it 290$
