Message: Does anyone else have an expination why my truck would run so funny...? It runs funny... I HAVE A 92 DAKOTA W/ A 3.9 V6... IT IDLES FINE SOMETIMES AND DIES OTHERS, SOMETIMES IT KINDA BOGGS DOWN (ONLY WHEN PUSHING THE GAS PEDDLE) LIKE IT IS NOT GETTING ENOUGH FUEL PRESSURE... CHECKED IT AND IS GETTING 32 PSI, WHEN REVED UP IT GOES UP TO ABOUT 40 PSI BUT DROP'S FAST... WHEN I PUT IT IN GEAR TO DRIVE(STANDARD) IT KINDA SPUTTERS AND BACKFIRES THROUGH THE EXHAUST AND SOMETIMES THE INTAKE...? I AM SO CONFUSED... WHEN I GO I FLOOR IT AND IT BOGGS DOWN LIKE I SAID AND SPUTTERS AND BACKFIRES BUT AFTER A FEW SECONDS MAYBE EVEN A MIN. IT CATCHES BACK UP TO IT'S SELF AND DRIVES ALLRIGHT BUT WHEN I GET TO A STOP SIGN IT STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN... THE PROBLEM IS GETTIN WORSE AND WORSE... IT HAS 114k A LITTLE UNDER ACTUALLY... HAVE REPLASED THE CAP AND ROTOR, SPARKPLUGS, FUEL FILTER, THE WIRES ARE NEW AS WELL. CHANGING THE FUEL PUMP SOON... ON THE HIGHWAY IT WILL ALSO BOGG DOWN FOR JUST A SEC BUT WILL CATCH RIGHT UP, DOESN'T HAPPEN AS OFTEN ON THE HIGHWAY AND ONLY LAST FOR A SECOND... PLEASE HELP ME...! SOMEONE SAID IT COULD BE THE THROTTLE POSISION SENSOR, THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATAR, OR EVEN THE CAT. CONVERTER...

Message: You got me on this one, not that I know a lot, lol. You said that you fuel pressure will go up then drops, that seems like the fuel pump maybe. Have you checked the injectors also? That is all I can think of. When you figure out what it is, let me know.

Message: The pressure goes up when I rev the engine but, I put that the pressure goes to about 40 psi hoping someone will know what the pressure is supposed to be (when idling it is about 32)... I have cleaned the injector's and have thought about changing the pump... I think I am gonna change the EGR valve and the timing chain... If it was the pump then I am pretty sure it would be about 15 or 20 psi and getting lower... It really acts funny man... Thanks for the reply though... I'll post what it was when I find out... Maybe someone has had the same problems and can point me in the right direction... HELP!

Message: i'm having sort of the same problems with my 97, but your motor has different components than mine, so... I have read that the EGR seems to be a common fix on pre '97 dakotas on other posts within this website. Do you notice if your problem has any kind of pattern? ie only after warm up, at a certain speed/rpm etc.? I had my fuel pump tested and the mechanic said a psi in the 40 range was normal while driving. If I were you...the EGR is much cheaper than a fuel pump, so i'd try that beast first. Let us know the answer to some of my questions, you can't post too many details, it'll only help. Good luck!

Message: I am going to change the EGR valve and put a new timint chain in it, I can hear the other chain rattle and roll... It means it is streached so it could have broke a tooth off or even jumped time... There are too many things that could be wrong w/ my truck I.E. Timing, AIC, TPS, MAP sensor, EGR valve, Fuel pump, Fuel pressure regulator, Distributor, etc... I have to start somewhere so I will go w/ the EGR valve and timing first... Thanks for the info...

Message: If you are saying that your fuel pressure is dropping, then I really doubt that it is the TPS and/or the Distributor, maybe im wrong though. I would check everything related to fuel management though. To me it sounds like the fuel pump or fuel regulator. But good luck, sounds like a pain in the butt.

Message: mark I think I have mine fixed, here's some food for thought- I took off my IAC and cleaned it yesterday, which made my problem a whole lot worse. So, I figured the IAC must be bad. I replaced it this morning and the problem was the same, I got it down the road, warmed up and smack, it fell right on it's face, doing the same sputter/stall deal. I limped back towards the house and eureka, it caught and ran sooooo much better, but the check engine light came on for the first time. I headed straight for autozone cuz i was scared if i turned the truck off, the light would go off. Their comp said it was the O2 sensor (before the cat.) I think the o2 was picking up the slack of the IAC, and once the new IAC was in, the trucks comp realized the o2 was also no good. My point is, take off your IAC (if 92's have that?? I have no clue) and clean it with some carb cleaner, it's free, and if your problem worsens, there you go. Really hope that helps ya. oh yeah, just in case, the IAC is on the back of my throttle body, I just took off the air hat, unplugged the connector and removed the two torx 25 screws, easy stuff.

Message: Sorry I didn't see your post earlier the O2 sensor should be replaced every 60,000 miles. If you have gone a 114,00 miles, it's definitely need changed.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: Well guys, I found out what it is... After days and days of deliberation and hard looking and listening to the engine run, tweeking things here and there I found out it was my timing chain... We adjusted the timing and it fixed it for about a day then my timing got screwed up again because my chain is extremly to loose... You can here the chain as it spins, it makes a wierd noise... We took of the belt and made sure it wasn't a noise coming from the pulleys and or the belt... I am soooo glad it wasn't the pump or any of the other expensive things... Thanks for your input guys...!
