Subject: Major motor problems...

Ok, first here is my set up
2003 Dakota
4X4
Automatic
3.9L V6
30,099 Miles
1.7 Roller Rockers (installed about 400-500miles ago--Harland Sharp if that matters)
Full MSD Kit (installed about 20,000 miles ago
MSD 6A
SS Blaster
Tach Adaptor
F&B large bore throttle body (instaled about 15,000 miles ago)
TransGo shift kit (medium springs, installed same time as Roller Rockers)
SuperChips reprogramer (89 octain performance)
Flowmaster muffler (installed about 20,000 miles ago)

Here is what happened:
I have put on about 500 miles since the roller rockers and shift kit installs. I haven't had any problems between now and then. No problems before the instal either. Stopped and got gas this morrning on way to work. Work is about 30 miles one way, 65 mph for about 25 miles of that. No problems all the way to work. Going home about 1/2 back (aprox 13 miles) motor starts to act like it got some bad gas/water/freeze up. Stalls out on the side of the road. Starts, runns ruff...spits and stutters. No duummy lights. Nurse it about another mile. Will not start. Dummmy lights activated. P0340, and P1391 I think.

While it was spitting and suttering the tach was going crazy...from 200rpm to 4500rpm and jumping inbetween. While the tach was going crazy, the motor didn't sound like it was going any where near that...I had my foot off the gas at this point, and the tach was still jumping. Get the truck home on a flat bed. Check my Superchips paper, and is says that the PCM doesn't see the Cam. Thinking that maybe the roller rockers messed something up I pull off the passenger cover. Everything seems fine. No binding. Everything still touqued down proper (21 F/lbs). Turned to motor over without the valve cover one, and they do move up and down leading me to beleave the that cam is turning with the crank. So, Timming gear chane is not broken, and rockers seem to be fine.

Now I'm thinking that the tach adpator is bad, as I said before the tach in the truck was going crazy. Pulled off the coil wire, put a screwdiver in it, and held a screwdiver to the block...nothing, no spark. Again, leading me to belive that is has something to do with the MSD kit.

After the installation of the MSD kit, I had no problems, and the install went smooth, all the instals went smooth now that I think about it.

Trans has fluid (can't check it without the motor running, but it was up to snuff last weekend, and I did use the ATF +4 ($91.00 a case btw!!). So I don't think it is the tranny either.

Any help at this point would be great! I'm going to call MSD tomorrow, and see what they have to say.

Thanks again,

House

P0340 No camshaft signal detected during engine cranking.

1391 Sometimes, I can't see the crank or cam sensor signal.

cam shaft sync i would think would come from the coil pick up in the dist, thats how you sync the cam with the crank

or broken dist shaft, check to see if the rotor button turns when the motor is cranked over

So, do you think that my warrenty is in effect. If there is any question, I'm not going to have it towed to the dealer to have him tell me that I have no warrenty, and tow it back home.

I will look into the crank sensor. I'm at school now, and can't get back to the truck till tomorrow after work.

Thanks everyone.

take all the mods that they can see off of the truck and put the stock stuff back on, first of all that eliminates the possiblilty of that being the bad part plus they will never notice the roller rockers, they wont pull the covers.

Replaced the MSD kit with stock...nothing. Ok, pulled the dis-cap. Replaced that along with the rotor, and dis pick up (cam sensor). Still nothing.

So figureing that the Crank sensor was the only thing left, I went for that. Stoped at TwilightZone, and got the sensor. I don't have a book for the truck yet (still on back order). So, I ask the sales man where it would go. He said on or near the dampner pully. First thing I do when I get home is look around the bell houseing (I wouldn't think that the crank sensor would be in the open where it could get messed up with water and the such). Yep, found it behind the oil filter. Looking at the stock one, and guess what. The two bolts holding it in place are just about to come out. One was holding on by about 3/4 of a full turn. I replaced it (thinking that it could have been damaged being that loose). Hooked up the MDS, put everything back together again.

And...

Fired Up!!! I was thinking that one of my mods would have made me have problems before the factory stuff....guess I was wrong. Anyway, now every time I change my oil, I'm looking at the two bolts thats for shur.

I would like to thank everyone that helped me. You have all been very nice, and great with the help.

Thanks again.
