Subject: 1997 rough start? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 V6, 2wd automatic. When I start the engine it will fire up then quickly stall out. It seems like it tries to catch at the idle (around 650) but doesn't and the engine dies. To get the engine running, I have to gas it when I fire it up, then slowly let of the gas and baby it into idle. After that it seems to run decent, although the idle seems low. Also, it will sometimes stall out at low speeds, even after I get it running.
It will do this about 75% of the time I start up, hot or cold. A mechanic replaced the IAC motor, put the problem persists.
Any ideas or help????

Message: I recently had a very similar problem with my 2003 Quad Cab 3.9. Took the dealership a month to fix it. It would never give a check engine light and never showed anything on the computer. It turned out to be the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor. It's located on the front of the throttle body. Hope it fixes your problem.

Message: forgot to mention, the problem is essentially the same with a full tank or close to empty. although, maybe slightly worse near empty
I haven't tried replacing the MAP sensor yet, but it is worth a shot. Mine also has yet to trigger the check engine light, so maybe it is a similar problem
thanks for the help

Message: Okay, two days ago I replaced the MAP sensor and everything seemed to be fixed. It would start right up and readily idle around 900. It sounded really healthy and life was good.
However, today I replaced the throttle body gasket that broke when I was cleaning the throttle body. I also disconnected the battery, which I guess reset the computer.
Now, the same problem is back and the engine wants to idle around 600-650 and doesnt have enough gas to start up on its own. The engine seems to be running smoother, though, but I still have to gas it and baby it into idle to start.
It seems doubtful that I could have screwed anything up just replacing the gasket. So I am guessing that resetting the computer did something???? Is it normal for the engine to seek such a low idle? Can I set the idle higher somehow?
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Message: Just disconnecting the battery will not reset the PCM. To reset the PCM you would disconnect the negative side of the battery and then you have to use your key and turn the ignition to the start position and leave it there for several minutes. My 97 DAK 3.9L idles at about 700.
At startup, the engine is using the PCM's preset instructions. The PCM does not start using readings from most of the sensors until the engine temp reaches 160 degrees. If you have already replaced the MAP and the IAC and you know that the TPS (throttle position sensor) is good, then your problem may lie within the PCM.

Message: I agree with daddio. My truck did the same thing awhile back and it ended up being a battery with a dead cell... the battery had enough juice to turn over the engine, but not enough voltage for the computer to operate correctly. The symptoms were just like you are describing. Dropped in a new battery and it hasn't done it since.

Message: i had a similar problem but mine was the aic. as far as your idle is concerned...if my motor is cold it will idle around 7-800 rpm and if it is at operating temp or above 50 degrees it will idle at 600 all day. in gear about 550.

Message: Have you checked the fuel pressure? Could be the fuel pump assembly in the tank or injectors. This would explain why it happens more when tank is enpty.
I also have a 97' like yours and I had the same problem. My problem was not the pump or inj but it was the IAC that simply needed to be cleaned. I am guessing that when I cleaned the TB without removing it from the engine may have caused a portion of this.
Hope it helps.

Message: Make sure all vacuum lines are connected. The MAP registers vacuum so if you have a leak it can do the same thing as before.

Message: Thanks for all the info
As it happens it was the battery. the cranking amps were really low, which explains why it struggled on start up.
New battery, problem gone.
