Subject: Dakota v. Ram 3.9 IP: Logged
Message: I recently drove a 2001 Ram with a 3.9 (I think). I have a 2000 Dakota with a 3.9. For some reason the Ram seemed to have more power, quicker acceleration/throttle response. I was just wondering if there was any difference in the Ram and Dakota engine setup that would explain these differences, or if standard rear-end gearing was different between the two. Both are stock, the Ram is a base model, nothing fancy.

Message: Actually, the computer in the Ram has a slightly more agressive fuel curve and a couple more degrees of timing advance compared to the dak, so that's what gives it a little bit more pep. No doubt gearing has something to do with it too. Lower gears will give you better response, but not necessarily better acceleration as well, so gearing isn't the only factor here. I have a 96 RAM with the 3.9, so I have some first hand experience.

Message: I think it may be in your head, while there is a better fuel curve, the Ram wieghs a lot more than the Dakota. It could possibly be the gear ratio. Otherwise it may have just felt quicker.

Message: there probably is minimal difference in reality. but here is the thougth that may not have crossed your mind, how is your truck really running? i thought mine was running great until i changed the timing chain and did some exhaust work and a good tune up. the truck runs alot stronger now... maybe your truck just needs a good run through.
