Subject: 96 3.9L V6 Ticking..Please Help!
IP: Logged

Message:
My 96 3.9L 5 Speed makes a loud knocking/ticking sound at idle, but stops when revved just over idle. No one can tell me what it is but have suspected the timing chain and or valves. It used to lose some power under acceleration like it wasn't getting enough air or fuel but it has not done this in months, or rarely if it does. The noise is quite loud and has done it for about 30,000 miles. Has anyone had this problem or heard of a solution? Please help!

it's probably your lifters. Have you ever had the timing chain replaced? There was a defect in my timing chain that I was told was regular for the 96's with the timing chain.

No I haven't replaced it. I've read posts about the MOPAR PERF. DBL. ROLLER chain as a replacement. Is there a way to check for sure?

well you can pull the dist cap and turn the crank backwards by hand and see how long it takes the rotor to move...should not have any play...

Replace the timing chain and put on the tensioner that is available from Dodge. I had the same problem and it drove me insane for three years. Follow Larry's how-to on the DD home page. It will give you all you need to know

Try tighting the exhaust manifold bolts also. When mine was doing it I thought it was the lifters and it turned out that it was just a loose manifold bolt. tighened it and problem solved.

if you replace the timing chain..DO NOT USE STOCK, use the double roller chain that is available, even if you dont put the tensioner on it you wont have a stretch problem ever again.
