Subject: V6 Dakota Problems, Please Help! IP: Logged
Message: Hi there, I did a search and found alot of usefull info but need some advice.
Ive been working on my dads truck(98 Dakota 3.9) for a week and everyday it seems like its something diff.
The problem is...when you start it up, it runs great and sounds and drives perfect. Once its gets up to temp after driving it for a while it starts to knock under acceleration. I cant exactly pinpoint where this is coming from but it sounds to be around the #1 cly.
I have replaced...
Timing chain, sprockets
Water pump
Belt and tensioner
Fan clutch
I have heard this could be the O2 sensor, or intake pan gasket. Im hoping this isnt internal. I am under the impression that if it was a rod or lifter, it would do it from startup.
Please help before i light this thing up and roast marshmallows

Message: is it doing this while idling or only while running? Does it always do it, or just sometimes? And does it begin to act up for a moment and then seem to cure itself?

Message: It sounds pretty smooth at idle, I dont hear a knock. But if you rev it up you can hear it only after the engine is warm. when the engine is cold, it doesnt seem to make the noise. Once its warm it doesnt seem to go away. Also, this started just two days ago.

Message: Funny situation that i am currently in myself.
Total Money put into it so far =$0
the exhaust (was there and missing bolts) took off the manifold and tore apart the cadyconverter :)
this caused extreem heat which burnt out gaskets and burnt out my spark plug wires.
using split fire plugs, will replace with cheaper ones
stopped there.
1. did compression and gas line tests (fine atm)
2. put in dry gas
3. replaced 2 burnt plug wires
Happens, in gear, when warmed up.
Dont happen, when in neutral, park, and when cold in gear.
I have another dodge that i will replace the 02 sensor from and see if it works, 94 vs 95 so no worries.
i dropped to 9mpg, from 13mpg, from 18mpg 10,000 miles from this situation when i bought it.
it sputters and has NO balls. NONE

Message: Well, that's good. My truck has no testicles, either. It does have a 175 HP V-6 motor, though.

Message: I currently have a 92 dak, but had a 92 mazda that was doing exactly as decribed after 100k plus miles. I did three things to it one at a time, and each improved the situation more. I don't know why they wouldn't work on any other vehicle.
First, I replaced the fuel filters and then I had a injection system cleaning service done. This helped significantly with the "no balls" situation. The engine was starved for fuel, but not enough to cause to to stop running. Then I replaced the t-stat. This stopped the pinging. It wasn't fully opening, which allowed it to keep the engine below red line temp, but not enough to keep it from getting hot spots that pinged under load. Before I did all this, it ran good at idle and when cold and my mileage was steadily getting worse. My mileage went up after doing all of these things. The computer tries to adjust things for optimal emmissions and efficency, but with these things messed up just a little, the computer acts as if you were pulling a large trailer, because thats how it appears to its sensors. Thus bad mileage, pinging because of overheating, and "no balls," just like you would get if you were pulling a very large and heavy trailer.
Fuel filter= about $10
T-stat= $2-$10 depending on quailty
Injector cleaning service= about $150

Message: well if you think its a motor knock there is one way to find out, pull it apart. other then that you have no options

Message: well that is pretty obvious. thanks for your reply but i was seeing if spark knock would cause this or something else before i tear it apart.

Message: Cut open the oil filter to see if there is any bearing in the paper. If you have a rod knocking there will metal in it.

Message: My problem does it without a knock. it just skips a beat. like it wants to have a heart attack.
so first thoughts were
dying battery, bad altenator, water in gas
each of these cause this occurance, i think everyone has gone through the shortage where you need to rev it up in neutral to make it home.
but this isn't dying or stalling. so it is not a battery short problem
i believe the fuel filter was done previously. the cleaning system?? wow. what does it do differently from getting a new sending/receiving unit along with rerunning the lines.
i know the cleaning costs less.
im going to try swapping the Throttle body.
94 dak died
95 dak totaled and keeping it for parts :)
$3500 im getting from the other guys insurance agency. he got ticketed

Message: you said you wondered if spark knock would cause it. well spark knock is a completely different sound then a rod knock. also a spark knock typically only happens under load and can usually be eliminated with a higher octane fuel. you may try going to a higher temp thermostat if you think that it is a spark knock and run 93 octane to see if it goes away. a rod knock is generally more metallic and you can usually tell right away. sometimes rod knocks only propagate once the motor warms as well...but like i said, without us hearing the problem its up to you.
