Message: the coil provides spark for the spark plugs. and yes it will not run if the coil is bad.

Message: An ignition coil is a tightly wound bundle of wires and its function is to take the 12 volts from your battery and increase it to the 50,000 volts that the spark plugs need to ignite the gas in the cylinders

Message: Yes, it's simply a transformer, and it's more like 35,000 volts.

Message: 50,000 is a bit off, unless you got your spark plug gap set at 1/8 inch or so.
