Subject: Double Roller Timing Chain on 3.9L IP: Logged
Message: I have done a search and looked through several pages of posts but nothing answered my questions. My chain is rattling pretty bad and it's getting worse, so I'm thinking about changing it out. The dealer wanted $900, so I am definately thinking about doing it myself. I understand that you can use a double roller chain from a 318. I was wondering though should I still get the tensioner from Dodge if using a double roller chain? Is it even possible to use them both together? I was also looking at the how-to for the timing chain. Is it necessary to degree in the cam? I am mechanically inclined, but I want to make sure that I don't mess with anything I don't have to. As long as I can make sure that it is at top dead center, I should be good, right? Thanks for the input.

Message: It's just me but I would use a double roller timing chain set for a 3.9l v6. I dont know where you searched but there are a dozen posts here. There's one on the home page. Do a google with the toolbar at the top of this page with the key word "timing chain". You'll get more than you can read in a day. I think the first one you'll get is titled "how to"

Message: its farely simple to do, dont worry about the rotation of the engine till you get the cover off, you have to have the two dots lined up when you take the old set off. but yes use the double roller set, i have it on my truck with no tensioner and she runs like a champ, and by the way 900 dollars is bull, i did it in my driveway for 70.

Message: Thanks guys.
CP, I did a search on "timing chain" and I saw the how-to, it just didn't answer my specific questions.
I thought that $900 was high, especially because at most it should take 5 hours from what I've seen already.
Thanks again.

Message: if you have any how to questions once you get started let us know, but its relatively simple, just make sure you have separate pans for coolant and tranny fluid for when you drain and remove your radiator, and stuff a rag in the front of your oil pan when you take off the timing cover so as not to get debris in your oil. oh, and have fun with that little hose on the top of your water pump, those can be fun! should take you about 5-6 hours if you know what you are doing mechanically.. oh here is a tip, instead of removing all of your accessories (alternator....) just remove the bracket and tie it back with a piece of wire to keep them out of your way...never have to adjust them that way at the end and its easy.
