Subject: 1989 - overheating with plow IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1989 Dakota 4x4 that only overheats with a snowbear plow attached to it in the "up" position.
Otherwise the cooling system work fine.
I realize that the plow blocks air flow into the radiator but on a 20 degree day I am surprised that the truck overheats within 5 minutes.
I have checked the following:
1) antifreeze level,
2) thermostat
The engine fan does spin at idle but I am unsure of how to check the fan clutch.
Is the above behavior normal for a dakota with a small plow on it?
Thanks,
Glenn

Message: try replacing the clutch on the cooling fan,
also when its up to temp with engine off run your hand over the ext of the radiator cooling fin,the middle and out side edges of the rad should be the same temp,if you have cold spots then the rad is plugged and needs a flushing or replaced

Message: id say you probably need to replace your radiator, i can sit idle on a 120 degree day with the air conditioning blasting with no problem...there is no air flow there. so i would say that should be a similiar situation as with the plow...i would say the radiator is either plugged or the fins are deteriorated...or possibly your fan isnt working right.
