Message: When I am only driving past 2nd gear i start to hear a squeaking noise. I cant really discribe how it sounds but I know its not coming from the wheels. When I get on the gas hard it starts to rattle and squeak. Any ideas on what it could be? I think its coming from either the rear or the engine its hard to tell inside the cab.

Message: I had a bad u-joint in the front causing a similar squeak on my truck. Very hard to pinpoint, but that could be your problem. You may want to check that out.

Message: I have a 2001 dakota and had a terrible squeaking noise in the front end. Turned out to be the right side upper and lower control arm bushings. Heat from the exhaust manifold dries them out more quickly than those on the left side. Also...NEVER spray the bushing with WD40 to try to eliminate squeaking...it only makes it worse!

Message: I had the same problem! Does your steering wheel shake just a tad too? I brought my dakota into the dealership 3 times and every time they said it's nothing. a couple weeks later I end up with a cracked transfer case because of a bad U joint! some certified mechanics they are.

Message: Is it a squeak along with a popping/cracking noise with a ringing sound to it?
If so, it's the U-joints, get them fixed NOW!
Crawl under the truck and grab the driveshaft at the u-joint and see if there is any play. There may not be, but that doesn't mean it's good.

Message: Interesting dealer story... At about 77K I call the dealer because I'm hearing a whine and a clunking which sounds like rear differential. I'm still under warranty so I didn't even crawl under to look, just made the appointment. Get there and there's a bill for $129.00 to service the rear diff. Nothing wrong with it, they said, just pulled the cover, checked it out and put the cover back on. So I say, under warranty right?. They say, nope. It ain't broke so it ain't a warranty item. It was routine "service". I say, If I drove it til the gears shot out the back, you'd cover that? Yup, they say. So I go home and decide to crawl under to look for issues causing the whine. Rear U-joint is about to fall out! I call the dealer and ask if anybody noticed the U-joint hanging by a thread, and they don't recall. I say if I bring it in is it covered. They say, bring it in, we'll "service" it. I hung up. Went down to Autozone, bought the part, pressed it in, was done in an hour. Great truck, bad dealer.
