Message: Hello fellow DAKers, I need your assistance! I have a '95 3.9L 4X4 EXT 5 speed. When I'm driving down the road, this motor will start skipping-like it may have lost a cylinder. It may even backfire a couple of times. This may happen 2-3 times a day and then it will run just fine. I took the truck to the dealer today to check codes and fuel pump. The fuel pump works fine with 35-40 psi. The only code(they didn't tell me the number)that come up was the engine was to cold. I have a 180-degree thermostat in the motor. It was up to temperature when I toke the truck to them-I thought it was a line of BS. Is there a code for an engine to be to cold? The only other suggestion they would offer-it maybe an Oxygen sensor. Would an O-2 sensor cause the problem I described. If it is, what kind of hassle is it to change. Thanks in advance for any help.

Message: There is a fault code for the the engine taking too long to warm up. Generally, it is an indicator that a thermostat is sticking open.

Message: And that can cause the engine to run too rich, which can sometimes cause backfiring.

Message: if its cold outside where you are that can happen with the 180. i was going to change my 195 to a 180 this winter but i decided to wait till this spring, also the oxygen sensor can make your truck run like CRAP. i had to change mine this summer, it was dumping in so much fuel i was getting 8 mpg and the truck didnt even idle well. it also backfired a little bit upon deceleration. good luck...
ps. to check your engine codes turn the key off, on, off, on, off, and leave it on, and the check engine light will flash you the codes. 55 is end of codes, and you can call your local parts store or dealer to get the meaning of the code.
