Subject: Fuel gauge problem IP: Logged
Message: Simple question. I have a 91 Dakota with a 3.9 V6.
My fuel guage is bouncing all over. Sometimes not even working. It twiches and only reads up to 75%.
Is this a sending unit problem, or a guage problem? And how easy is it to install a new sending unit if that is the problem? Thanks

Message: The first time this happened to me (~99), it was the sending unit (chose to pay someone to do it). Now my fuel guage is not working again, but not bouncing this time, it's just always on E. I have a '95 3.9. I haven't been motivated enough when I ahve time to dig into my issue, but I suspect a sending unit again.
Seems most people here would rather take the bed off than drop the tank.
i recall a post where someone used an eraser to get rid of some scorch marks, this fixed that problem. If you take yours apart, might be worthwhile to check that out.

Message: My '91 does the same thing, it does settle down at about 1/4 of a tank and seems to work fine and the low fuel light works. I always reset the trip meter and know its time to fill up around 300 miles (plus or minus 50 miles depending on the kind of driving). It isn't an uncommon problem but the problem is related to the fuel pump in the tank. Not worth the time and money to change for me so I'll wait till the fuel pump dies then mess with it then.

Message: My 95 3.9L did the same. I removed the pan(only 8 bolts, a couple wiring plugs and the filler spout) and removed the sending unit. I cleaned up the contacts the float uses and bent them in a little the apply more pressure and it worked fine.

Message: the problem is the sending unit which is part of the pump assembly, the contacts get wore out and the guage will only read down by empty (where the contacts didnt get touched as much) and the only fix is to drop the tank, remove the unit and either try to fix it or replace it. i replaced mine this summer...make sure you orient the sending unit in the right direction or you will drop the tank three times like me...that'll piss ya off
