Message: I would not change the rear main seal myself, it is a big job. I had a leak once and thought is was the rear main seal so I took it to garage a to get it checked out. Turned out to be the valve cover gaskets leaking toward the back of the covers. Put a new set in been good ever since.

Message: My Dak is a 1988 4x4 with a 3.9L. This is a best guess, but around 130,000 miles they where replaced. My truck has close to 200,000 miles on it now.

Message: Any small leak will travel to that spot-it is the lowest part of the motor, then will blow back as you drive around and will even get your rear axle greasy. I thought I blew my rear main seal one day. I actually needed to put a little more hurt on the OIL FILTER. I then wiped and washed the underside including the gap behind the motor in between the tranny and the oil pan. A month later it was still dry. But other causes could be you need to tighten some bolts at the valve covers, heads, or the oil pan. Or gaskets at those locations. Could be undertorqued oil filter, or blown crankshaft seals. Front seal can be replaced without pulling the motor but involves removing the accessories, waterpump and timing cover. Rear one may require dropping the oil pan and after removing the old seal, inserting the new seal in two pieces-top piece pushed and pulled into its seat. Depending on how yours is set up. Heres my advice. Clean it up and drive it. Reinspect it to find the source. How much is it leaking? If you dont need to add oil at all between oil changes - fugadaboutit.
